Job Opportunity: Cataloging and Metadata Librarian, Weinberg Memorial Library at The University of Scranton

We invite applications for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track Cataloging and Metadata Librarian. The regularly scheduled hours for this position will be primarily Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. A generous benefits package is offered, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, a retirement plan, and paid vacation, holidays, and research leave.

The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian facilitates access to Library resources by supervising the Library’s Cataloging Department and maintaining the accuracy of the Library’s online catalog.

Essential Duties:

– Directs and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Cataloging Department

– Supervises and evaluates the work of one Cataloging Assistant

– Catalogs materials in all subjects, formats and languages

– Maintains the accuracy of the catalog’s records

– Manages authority control and the bulk loading of bibliographic records into the library catalog

– Provides cataloging statistics for library reports and accreditation reports for various University departments

– Consults with Special Collections and Digital Services as needed

– Explores and integrates appropriate emerging technologies into cataloging practices

– Maintains close relationships with all library functions (circulation, research services, acquisitions, special collections and systems)

– Participates in planning, implementing, and configuration of the integrated library system (ILS) as it pertains to cataloging functions and public display

– Participates in information literacy instruction

Additional Skills Required:

-Familiarity with cataloging tools and standards including: RDA, AACR2, LCSH, LCCN, and MARC21 format for bibliographic holdings and authority control

– Ability to implement new cataloging standards and procedures

– Knowledge of XML and linked data technologies (e.g., XSLT, RDF, OWL, SPARQL, BIBFRAME)

– Familiarity with emerging trends in library systems and services.

– Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and presentation skills

– Strong analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills

– Ability to work effectively both as a team member and independently

– Ability to work creatively and collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and community-at-large

Minimum Education and Job Experience Requirements:

Must possess an American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master’s degree at time of appointment.   Two years of cataloging experience (including non-book cataloging) working in a library, archives, or museum.  Experience with an integrated library system (ILS) preferably Innovative Interfaces, Inc.’s Sierra. Working knowledge of OCLC Connexion or Worldshare Management Services.  Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate, and implement projects. Supervisory experience.

Technical Services Clerk, Weinberg Memorial Library at The University of Scranton

The Technical Services Clerk is responsible for assisting in the management and access to the Library’s electronic and print resources through a variety of technical procedures including: elementary cataloging, performing basic library acquisitions processes, recording and processing library materials in all formats, and assisting in file and records maintenance. This position also provides backup for the Library’s mail services. The work schedule for this position will be Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additional hours may be required.

Education and Job Experience Requirements:

Associate’s degree, or two years completed towards a Bachelor’s degree is required. One (1) year library work experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree preferred. Library work experience in Technical Services, with use of an integrated library system is preferred.

Job Opportunity: Digital Services Librarian, Weinberg Memorial Library at The University of Scranton

We invite applications for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track Digital Services Librarian, commencing by July 16, 2018.  The regularly scheduled hours for this position will be primarily Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  A generous benefits package is offered, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, a retirement plan, and paid vacation, holidays, and research leave.

The Digital Services Librarian is responsible for developing, coordinating, and managing the Library’s digital collections and related digital projects. This position works closely with faculty and staff throughout the Library and University, particularly University Archives and McHugh Special Collections, Information Technology, Enrollment Management and External Affairs, and the Division of University Advancement.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops, manages, and assesses the Library’s digital collections and web archives in accordance with established standards and best practices.
  • Establishes workflows and provides oversight for the processing, description, publication, and long-term preservation of digital materials.
  • Investigates, evaluates, and selects software, tools, and platforms for the efficient and effective management of digital collections.
  • Works closely with University Archives and McHugh Special Collections faculty and staff to coordinate the digitization of rare and unique materials.
  • Collaborates with departments and divisions across campus to capture, describe, and preserve born digital content relevant to the University Archives, such as masters and honors theses, other forms of student scholarship, the University website, and University publications.
  • Develops policies and procedures that support appropriate and user-friendly access to digital materials, in consultation with relevant stakeholders.
  • Serves as the Library’s liaison to various consortia on collaborative digital initiatives, such as the Pennsylvania Digital partnership and the Digital Public Library of America.
  • Directs, supervises, and evaluates the work of the part-time Digital Services Assistant.
  • Coordinates with University faculty and, when feasible, community partners (such as the Scranton Public Library and Lackawanna Historical Society) on digital projects.
  • Participates in Library and University initiatives, e.g., by serving on committees, etc.
  • Provides research services and information literacy instruction to library users as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Possession of an American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master’s degree at time of appointment
  • Two years of experience working in a library, archives, or museum
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate, and implement projects
  • Experience with digital collections initiatives, such as digitization, born digital records management, and web archiving
  • Experience with (or coursework related to) current metadata schemas and standards

3D Printing in the Library

The Library has a Makerbot Replicator 2 and The Reilly Learning Commons is now offering 3D printing! Printing is done in the technology support room (124J) during their office hours or by visiting the Learning Commons Coordinator, Sheli Pratt-McHugh, in room 124H. Prints costs $0.10 per gram. To request a print job you must first sign the Acceptable Use Policy and fill out a 3D printing request form, which can also be found in the technology support room.

Spotlight on Student Worker Mackenzie Thompson

Mackenzie Thompson, from Breezy Point, NY, is a senior Occupational Therapy major with minors in Psychology and Counseling and Human Services. Mackenzie has worked as a technical consultant in the Reilly Learning Commons since its opening in August 2014, where she loves working with people, helping them with technology and using the library. Over the past three years, Mackenzie has helped implement new technology in the Library and is always happy to share her knowledge with others.

Mackenzie is very active on campus working with the Royal Signers on the Executive Board, serving as Co-Director of the Royal Ambassadors, and a member of the Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA), and Wishmakers. Mackenzie is also a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, Alpha Epsilon Delta, and Psi Chi.

Mackenzie’s hobbies include drawing, reading, and decorating for holidays. Mackenzie’s favorite book is Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and her favorite movie is Anastasia. You might be surprised to learn that Mackenzie has FOUR dogs! Two 8-year-old Golden Retrievers, Brooke and Lucky, and two rescues, a Siberian Husky named Indigo, age 3.5, and a St. Bernard, Indigo, age 5.

Mackenzie hopes to become a Pediatric Occupational Therapist. Mackenzie’s favorite professors have been all of her OT professors who share their enthusiasm for the field with their students.

After graduation in May, Mackenzie will continue with her education in pursuing a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy at the University of Scranton.

Spotlight on Student Worker Emily Dineen

Emily Dineen is a senior Occupational Therapy major from Bethel, Connecticut. Emily has worked as a technical consultant in the Reilly Learning Commons for two years where she shares her enthusiasm for technology with others and helps students and faculty alike. Working in the Library has provided Emily a greater sense of community with students and staff and she has enjoyed the knowledge she has gained from the position. Emily encourages students to take advantage of the many resources and supports available to them in the Library.

Emily is very active with the campus community! She works in the CTLE as a tutor, volunteers with Campus Ministries, Wishmakers on Campus, and the Occupational Therapy Association. Emily is also involved with the International Service Program and visited Honduras in the summer of 2015 for a service trip.

Emily’s hobbies include spending time with family and friends, playing and watching sports, and going to the lake or ocean.  She also enjoys reading and writing. Her favorite book is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer. Emily’s favorite film is Elf. You may be surprised to learn that Emily LOVES classic rock music!

Emily hopes to become an occupational therapist and to advocate for her clients. She would also like to become an occupational therapy professor to help educate and encourage the next generation of future OTs. Her favorite professor is Dr. Marlene Morgan Ed.D., and her favorite class is OT 461: Practice IV Geriatrics.

After graduation in May, Emily will continue with her education in pursuing a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy at the University of Scranton.
