Spotlight on Student Worker Xiomara Rolon

This week the student spotlight is on Xiomara Rolon of Wilkes Barre, PA.  Mara is a Theatre major who will graduate on June 1. She joined the Circulation Services staff in September, 2013 and has been happily assisting patrons at the Circulation Desk since then.

Her hobbies include writing, art and reading. She finds our library’s collection of plays outstanding. Speaking of plays, she has participated in several of the University Players productions this year. When she wasn’t working behind the scenes or on the set, she was on stage playing the part of one character or another. Most recently, she did a fantastic job playing the part of Baloo the bear in Jungalbook.

Off the stage, she has a very pleasant personality. She always expresses herself with such enthusiasm and animation. The one thing she enjoys most about working in the library is making many new friends. She is seriously considering looking for work in a library to support herself while she pursues a theatrical career.

Write and Cite Comes to the WML

Last Tuesday and Wednesday, May 13th and 14th, the CTLE‘s Writing Center set up camp in the Weinberg Memorial Library to offer assistance to students with their final papers.

This collaboration between the Writing Center and the Library was called “Write & Cite,” and included 4-6 Writing Consultants located at two stations (with refreshments!) during the evening on the Tuesday and Wednesday of Dead Week. Consultants were available for drop-in appointments in the 1st floor Reilly Learning Commons and the 2nd floor Reference Desk area from 5 to 8 pm both nights. The premise was for consultants to be available to assist students with their writing where that writing was actually taking place, and the close proximity of the Reference Desk meant students could also be referred to a Reference Librarian for assistance with formatting their citations.

And the event was a success! Thirty-three students received assistance through writing consultations over the course of both nights of the program, with three referrals to a librarian for citation assistance.

Do not fear: beginning in Fall 2014, the Writing Center will have two satellite locations in the Reilly Learning Commons, making our resourceful Writing Consultants a permanent fixture in the Weinberg Memorial Library.

Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month: Art Exhibit

To celebrate the national Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month of May, Asian Studies in collaboration of Weinberg Memorial Library is hosting an art exhibit in the Library’s 5th floor Heritage Room. These art posters from Smithsonian Museums are both educational and visual-stunning. They give a historical account of the journeys of Asian immigrants and Asian Americans–their struggles, contribution, and challenges.

 

About Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month:

May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. A rather broad term, Asian-Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).

Like most commemorative months, Asian-Pacific Heritage Month originated in a congressional bill. In June 1977, Reps. Frank Horton of New York and Norman Y. Mineta of California introduced a House resolution that called upon the president to proclaim the first ten days of May as Asian-Pacific Heritage Week. The following month, senators Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga introduced a similar bill in the Senate. Both were passed. On October 5, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the annual celebration. Twelve years later, President George H.W. Bush signed an extension making the week-long celebration into a month-long celebration. In 1992, the official designation of May as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month was signed into law.

The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

Library Research Prize Winners!

Caroline Swift, an MBA student with a concentration in Operations Management, and Christine Panzitta, a junior Secondary Education/History major, were selected as the 2014 Library Research Prize winners.

The Weinberg Memorial Library at The University of Scranton inaugurated the prize in 2011 to recognize excellence in research projects that show evidence of significant knowledge of the methods of research and the information gathering process, and use of library resources, tools, and services.

Honorable Mention awards in the Graduate Category included Taryn Anthony, a Chemistry major; Patricia Gelling, an Occupational Therapy major; and a group of Physical Therapy majors consisting of Kyle Corrado, Christine Fischer, Michael McGraw and Kristin Ryffel.

Honorable Mentions were also awarded to two undergraduate students—Natalie Della Posta, a Neuroscience major and Stephen Gadomski, an Exercise Science and Sport major.

Prize winners were honored at a reception on Thursday, May 8, 2014 in the Heritage Room of the Weinberg Memorial Library.

WML-CTLE Award Ceremony

Hey! You! Get into our (Dura)Cloud!

The Weinberg Memorial Library’s got a brand new cloud – and unlike Mick Jagger’s, on ours, not even two terabytes are a crowd.

Thanks to our new partnership with DuraCloud, the master files from our digital collections are now being preserved in a more robust repository, where we can monitor the health of our bitstreams, discover and repair any corruption or damage, and automatically back everything up offsite in Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier cloud storage.

This is a pretty important step up for us. Since our beginnings in 2008, our digital collections have expanded from 0 to 1.75 terabytes (that’s about 1,792 gigabytes!), with no signs of stopping anytime soon. At that scale, it was getting difficult for us to manage our own local and remote backups, and we were quickly running out of local storage space. The move to DuraCloud not only smooths out our workflow, it also gives us plenty of room to grow for the future.

As an added bonus, thanks to interoperability between DuraCloud and our Archive-It web archiving service, all of the web content that we capture for preservation from University-related sites will be automatically backed up in DuraCloud, too.

All of these changes are on the back end, so users won’t notice any difference – you can still search and browse our digital collections at www.scranton.edu/library/digitalcollections.

Faculty Scholarship Exhibit

Faculty Scholarship ExhibitDuring the month of May, the Weinberg Memorial Library is hosting its annual Faculty Scholarship Exhibit in the Library’s 5th floor Heritage Room. The exhibit features books and articles produced by University of Scranton faculty members since 2011. The exhibit, organized by academic department, provides an overview of the diversity and quality of scholarly accomplishments by the University’s faculty. WML+10: Open Forum on the Future of the Library

One of our ongoing projects at the Weinberg Memorial Library is thinking about and planning for the future. Our WML+10 project is an attempt to envision what the Library’s building, collections, staff, and services will look like in 10 years. Working with representatives from the Library Advisory Committee, we’ve drafted a report summarizing our discussions so far, and we’re now looking for broader feedback from the University community.

If you’re interested in the future of the Library, please take some time to review our progress report and share your thoughts with us. We’re holding an Open Forum on Friday, May 9th from 12pm-1pm in the Heritage Room (please RSVP to kym.fetsko@scranton.edu) to begin the discussion, but if you can’t make it, please send questions, comments, suggestions, and concerns to us via email at digitalcollections@scranton.edu. Learning Commons Floor Plan FinalYou may have seen the article in the April 28th issue of Aquinas about the changes coming to the Reilly Learning Commons. In addition to collaborative spaces, high-end computers and larger study surfaces, there will be additional group study rooms, a lecture capture room and CTLE Writing Center satellite service. You may be wondering what will happen to the furniture that is now located in this first floor room.  We are looking throughout the building to match places where a person might enjoy studying or sitting  that currently do not have seating.  If you have some suggestions, please email reference@scranton.edu

New TechCon Positions for Fall

The Library will be hiring new TechCons, student work study positions, to provide technical support to students within the new Reilly Learning Commons. The Learning Commons will open in August on the first floor of the Library.

TechCons (technology consultants) are highly skilled student workers who are technology savvy, self-driven, reliable, and able to work independently as well as in a team environment. They work approximately ten to twelve hours each week, with flexible scheduling, and gain valuable real-world experience and training.

The Learning Commons TechCons will:

  • Provide technical support/troubleshoot technology related problems for students and faculty in the Learning Commons in the use of:
  • Software:  Windows and Macintosh Operating Systems, Microsoft Office Applications, E-mail, Web browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox), Panopto lecture capture software, LibCal room reservation, audio and video editing software on MACs and PCs (GarageBand, iMovie, etc.)
  • Hardware:  PC and Macintosh basics, printer basics, Scannx scanner
  • Network:  wireless network access
  • Systems:  MyScranton, LMS, Royal Drive
  • Work directly with faculty and students on a wide range of projects.
  • Research and Present emerging technologies
  • Are knowledgeable about web design and multimedia software
