{"id":229,"date":"2019-07-17T11:14:00","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T15:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/biology\/?p=229"},"modified":"2019-07-17T11:15:36","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T15:15:36","slug":"scranton-students-present-their-research-at-microbe-2019-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/biology\/2019\/07\/17\/scranton-students-present-their-research-at-microbe-2019-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"Scranton students present their research at Microbe 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Research students in Dr. Bryan Crable\u2019s Microbial Physiology Group at the University of Scranton presented their research this summer at the American Society of Microbiology\u2019s Microbe 2019 in San Francisco, CA.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their study, \u201cThe Effects of Polystyrene Microparticles on Growth of Model Enteric Bacteria\u201d was well-received.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The students met investigators from the Air Force Research Laboratory, the University of Oklahoma, and the University of California, Berkeley. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The American Society of Microbiology represents over 20,000 microbiologists from around the globe and is the world\u2019s largest life sciences professional society.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Highlights of ASM Microbe 2019 included an opening lecture from 2018 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Dr. Frances Arnold (Caltech) and a symposium lecture by Director of the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, Dr. Jo Handelsman.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Dr. Arnold\u2019s talk focused on her research evolving enzymes to do novel chemical reactions.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Dr. Handelsman\u2019s talk focused on her experience going from an undergraduate student at Cornell University who was told \u201cgirls don\u2019t do science\u201d to Full Professor at Yale and a three year appointment as President Barack Obama\u2019s Associate Director for Science.<\/p>\n<p>Rising senior Biology major Toby Ippolito had this to say about the meeting:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The opportunity to attend ASM Microbe 2019 allowed me to take an important step in my professional career.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Presenting our study to those interested in our research required a thorough understanding of the project.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I expanded my personal knowledge of Dr. Crable\u2019s research and had the opportunity to share our work with the scientific community.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>ASM Microbe 2019 provided an opportunity to interact and network with leading researchers from around the globe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/biology\/files\/2019\/07\/US-students-at-ASM-2019.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-230\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/biology\/files\/2019\/07\/US-students-at-ASM-2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"854\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/biology\/files\/2019\/07\/US-students-at-ASM-2019.jpg 854w, https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/biology\/files\/2019\/07\/US-students-at-ASM-2019-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/biology\/files\/2019\/07\/US-students-at-ASM-2019-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 854px) 100vw, 854px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Students in attendance from left to right:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rising senior Zachary Zimbardo, rising senior Toby Ippolito, rising junior and lead author Molly Elkins, and rising senior Joe Vellardito.<\/p>\n<p>The study presented was:<\/p>\n<p>Elkins, MK, T Ippolito, J Vellardito, Z Zimbardo, K Cebular, J Jeffers, J Layou, W Oxley, M Strein, J Simon, G Ragusa, and BR Crable.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>2019.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The effects of polystyrene microparticles on growth of model enteric bacteria.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>ASM Microbe, San Francisco, CA<\/p>\n<p>The students&#8217;
