Being Environmentally Friendly on Campus

April 22, is Earth Day! Earth Day is meant to be a reminder to take care of the planet and to inspire others to do what is right for the environment.

There are plenty of ways you can be environmentally friendly on campus!

Every building on campus has separate bins for trash, plastic and cardboard.  Separate plastic and cardboard from your trash, and be sure to recycle them accordingly.  On average, plastic water bottles take 450 years to decompose.  That means when a plastic bottle ends up in the trash, it’s sitting in a landfill for 450 years.  Recycling is an easy way to prevent this and help the earth stay clean!

 Use Reusable bottles

Using reusable water bottles is a great way to help the environment!  Plastic water bottles don’t always end up in the recycling where they should be, so reusable water bottles can help get rid of unnecessary waste.  In addition, reusable thermoses and travel mugs are a great way to get rid of waste as well.  Starbucks gives a discount on drinks when customers bring their own reusable travel mug for their drinks!

Be mindful of how much trash you generate

Do you really need that many napkins, or is it just a habit to take 5 each time?  Be mindful of what disposable items you are using, and try to think through how much of it you will realistically use.

Earth is the only home we have, so it’s important to show it some love!
