Gaining (Paid) Experience

Finding a summer internship can be hard enough before financials get involved.  Many companies are unable to provide a salary or stipend for their summer internships.  The University of Scranton offers a selective opportunity that gives stipends to undergraduate students with internships that do not provide any salary or stipend.

The Royal Experience Internship Program is available to all rising sophomores, juniors and seniors, and gives students the opportunity to receive a stipend of up to $4,000.

Senior Mark Miller applied to the program in 2017 for his internship at Speedway Motorsports, Inc.

“In sports, many summer internship opportunities are unpaid,” Miller said. “Because of the Royal Experience Internship Program, I was able to pursue my passion and gain valuable sports marketing experience. The stipends provided with the program during the summer helped pay for my living expenses as I worked in a new city. I am so thankful that the Center for Career Development has a program like this in place to help students take internships in industries they want to work in one day.”

According to the Royal Experience Program website, “By eliminating financial barriers, this program allows students to explore their career interests, gain new skills, and experience the world of work.”

To apply, students must have accepted an unpaid internship for the summer of 2019.  Hours must add up to a total of 200 hours, for 8-12 weeks (May 28 – August 23, 2019).  The majority of hours must be spent on-site at the location indicated on the application. However, some remote/online work is allowed.
