{"id":644,"date":"2016-10-04T11:11:13","date_gmt":"2016-10-04T15:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/englishandtheatre\/?p=644"},"modified":"2016-10-04T12:04:37","modified_gmt":"2016-10-04T16:04:37","slug":"cross-cultural-centers-present-on-microaggressions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/englishandtheatre\/2016\/10\/04\/cross-cultural-centers-present-on-microaggressions\/","title":{"rendered":"Cross Cultural Centers Present on Microaggressions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday, September 29, The Cross Cultural Centers delivered a presentation to university students titled: \u201cRecognizing Microaggressions and the Messages They Send.\u201d This event was open to the university, but its primary audience included first year students, and more specifically those taking Writing 107 this fall.<\/p>\n<p>For the Summer 2016 writing placement exam, incoming first year students were asked to read and respond to \u201cThe Coddling of the American Mind,\u201d found in the September 2015 issue of <em>The Atlantic.<\/em> First Year Writing Instructors in the English Department read over and scored these exams, and believed that students would benefit from a closer examination of the term Microaggressions. Prof. Sabia and Dr. Grettano then reached out to the Cross Cultural Centers in the hopes of creating a program centered around that term.<\/p>\n<p>Jose Sanchez, the Assistant Director of the Cross Cultural Centers, and his Graduate Assistant Ali Hamilton agreed to create a presentation and worked together with Prof. Sabia and Dr. Grettano on this program for the past several weeks. It was delivered Thursday to about 150 students and several faculty members.
