It also is designed to fulfill a course requirement for Scranton&#8217;s <strong>Environmental Studies<\/strong> concentration.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the course, students learn first-hand how aerobic training enhances human performance and health, and they do it by training in some of the region\u2019s most beautiful and challenging environments. Click on the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/extremephysiology\/ep-nepa-blogs\/\"><strong>EP NEPA Blogs<\/strong><\/a> tab above to read about student experiences from our initial offering of the course during Summer 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The course is made possible through a partnership between the University and the Pocono Forests and Waters Conservation Landscape (PFW CL).<\/p>\n<p>Biology faculty Terrence Sweeney and Tara Fay deliver the physiological aspects of the course, including laboratory pre- and post-training fitness testing of the students and themselves, as well classroom lectures and activities interspersed with outdoor experiences across the Pocono Forests and Waters landscape surrounding the Scranton community.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pecpa.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pennsylvania Environmental Council<\/a> (PEC) Vice President Janet Sweeney, External Lead for the PFW CL, leads an Activity Site and Outreach Steering Committee. Committee members, who serve in their professional capacities as stewards of Pennsylvania\u2019s natural resources, provide the broad expertise that enables us select the very best sites for the courses training activities \u2013 and at the same time broaden the learning outcomes of the course. Sweeney reaches out to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcnr.state.pa.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR)<\/a> regional advisors and parks and forest managers, local land trust preserve managers, and trail groups to arrange the outdoor class activities and venues, to serve as on-site speakers,\u00a0 and to coordinate class\u00a0service projects.<\/p>\n<p>Between biking 28 miles from Clarks Summit to Nicholson and back, kayaking on the Susquehanna River and Peck\u2019s Pond, hiking in Ricketts Glen and Lackawanna state parks, and clearing Japanese Knotweed from the shore of the Lackawanna River (to name just a few of the activities), the Summer 2016 EP NEPA students were immersed in the natural resources of the region.<\/p>\n<p>The win-win partnership between Scranton and the PFW CL enable the course to achieve its multifaceted goals<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>educating students about the synergism of nutrition and training in the enhancement of human physical performance and health; and<\/li>\n<li>advancing the PFW CL\u2019s core goals\u00a0of conservation, community, and connections.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Conservation<\/strong> \u2013 teaching students about how organizations not only conserve and maintain lands, but also why they do the work that they do;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Community<\/strong> \u2013 engaging students; educating them about\u00a0the wonderful parks, forests, preserved lands, and trails there are to explore in Northeast Pennsylvania; showing them how they can be stewards of their community;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Connections<\/strong> \u2013 introducing students\u00a0to the growing trail network in Northeast Pennsylvania and the people who are working tirelessly to build, maintain, and connect these trails.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Need more info? Optional activities, such as whitewater rafting, may be\u00a0scheduled on weekends. Course enrollment is\u00a0capped at 10-12\u00a0students. Students must apply for enrollment in the course to ensure that they are able to carry out the physical activities that course participation will entail.
