How have ideas about race changed over time in Latin America?  How have these ideas affected the lives of different Latin Americans?  This University of Scranton course will answer these two questions by examining race in Latin America since independence (ca.1810).  Three case studies will structure our exploration: indigeneity in Mexico, blackness in Brazil, and race and nation in the Dominican Republic.  Along the way, we will read a variety of primary and secondary sources to discuss racial hierarchies, legal and extralegal discrimination, and forces for change.  Students will use these discussions to produce significant written work and collaboratively present a topic of their choice as a Food for Thought Seminar.
