One of our most frequently asked questions\u00a0(FAQs)\u00a0at the Research Services desk is how to find articles on a specific topic. While the details of your research\u00a0(e.g.\u00a0topic and assignment requirements)\u00a0will make\u00a0a difference in the approach you\u00a0should take, there are some general recommendations\u00a0you\u00a0can apply to\u00a0your\u00a0research.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First, you\u00a0need\u00a0to find a\u00a0database\u00a0that will have the information you need. To locate databases that cover your topic start at your\u00a0<\/span>MyScranton<\/span><\/a>\u00a0account, select the\u00a0<\/span>Library\u00a0<\/span><\/b>tab, and then under the list of \u201cLibrary Links\u201d\u00a0click on\u00a0<\/span>Databases<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0Once you are on the\u00a0<\/span>Databases page<\/span><\/a>, you will be able to \u201cBrowse databases by subject\u201d using the drop-down menu there.\u00a0If your subject is not\u00a0listed\u00a0select\u00a0<\/span>General Topics<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, you can look through the\u00a0list\u00a0of\u00a0databases\u00a0suggested for\u00a0your\u00a0subject area.\u00a0Read their descriptions to see\u00a0what type of content they cover so you can select the right database(s) to search in.\u00a0For example, if you need articles\u00a0covering\u00a0bridal ceremonies in\u00a0ancient Rome, you\u00a0will\u00a0not use\u00a0databases\u00a0like\u00a0<\/span>Current Affairs in Video<\/span><\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>Statista<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>because they contain videos on hot topics and\u00a0business statical reports, respectively. I<\/span>nstead,\u00a0you should reference databases such as\u00a0<\/span>JSTOR\u00a0<\/span><\/i>or\u00a0<\/span>America: History & Life<\/span><\/i>, both of which cover history.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once you have selected a database, you can put together a search strategy.\u00a0<\/span>Do not type complete questions into a database!<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Instead, break your topic down into keywords and input those into the database\u2019s search boxes.\u00a0A search strategy for\u00a0bridal\u00a0ceremonies in ancient Rome might look like:<\/span>

After you run your search, look through the list of results to find articles you can use. This is a great point in the search process to learn new keywords\u00a0to\u00a0incorporate\u00a0into your search\u00a0strategy\u00a0or add\u00a0additional\u00a0limiters\u00a0such as publication date\u00a0(these filters\/limiters will often be\u00a0located\u00a0to the left of your search results).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
