{"id":1655,"date":"2010-03-01T15:13:44","date_gmt":"2010-03-01T19:13:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wmlinfospot.wordpress.com\/?p=1655"},"modified":"2016-07-20T16:11:03","modified_gmt":"2016-07-20T20:11:03","slug":"oscar-scranton-schemel-connection-jay-parinis-the-last-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/2010\/03\/01\/oscar-scranton-schemel-connection-jay-parinis-the-last-station\/","title":{"rendered":"Oscar-Scranton-Schemel Connection: Jay Parini&#8217;s The Last Station"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[youtube=http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bTh-vQho7UU]<\/p>\n<p>Now that the Olympics are over, it&#8217;s time to start preparing for the next big event &#8211; the <a href=\"http:\/\/oscar.go.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Academy Awards<\/a> are this Sunday!\u00a0 And this year, there&#8217;s a Scranton connection.<\/p>\n<p>West Scranton native <strong>Jay Parini<\/strong> is the author of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/bWsYiZ\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Last Station<\/em><\/a>, a novel about the last year of Tolstoy&#8217;s life &#8211; and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0824758\/\" target=\"_blank\">film adaptation<\/a> of the novel has received two Oscar nominations.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/oscar.go.com\/nominations\/nominees\/helen-mirren\/2852\" target=\"_blank\">Helen Mirren<\/a> (who plays Sofya Tolstoy) and <a href=\"http:\/\/oscar.go.com\/nominations\/nominees\/christopher-plummer\/2837\" target=\"_blank\">Christopher Plummer<\/a> (Leo Tolstoy) are up for Best Supporting Actor and Best Actress, respectively.\u00a0\u00a0 <em>The Last Station<\/em> was also nominated for five awards (including Best Feature) at Friday&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/spiritawards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Film Independent Spirit Awards<\/a>.\u00a0 For more details about the film and Parini&#8217;s work, see this <a href=\"http:\/\/thetimes-tribune.com\/arts-living\/oscar-nominations-for-last-train-station-may-mean-new-interest-in-parini-s-novel-1.596824\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> from the February 5 Scranton Times-Tribune.<\/p>\n<p>This Spring, Mr. Parini will be making a special appearance on campus to discuss his book and the film at one of our <a href=\"http:\/\/academic.scranton.edu\/department\/wml\/schemel.html\" target=\"_blank\">Schemel Forum<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/academic.scranton.edu\/department\/wml\/schemel-luncheons.html\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Insights&#8221; luncheons<\/a>.\u00a0 The luncheon will be held <strong>Friday, April 9<\/strong> from 12pm-1:30pm in Room 509 Brennan Hall.\u00a0\u00a0 Registration fees are $20 per person or $30 per couple for the luncheon &#8211; and Schemel Forum members get in free.
