Deciphering Moscow&#8217;s Centers of Power.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Formerly CNN&#8217;s Moscow bureau chief, Dougherty described her experiences as a journalist in Russia, providing character sketches of former President of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin, former President and current Prime Minister <a href=\"http:\/\/www.premier.gov.ru\/eng\/premier\/biography.html\" target=\"_blank\">Vladimir Putin<\/a>, and current President <a href=\"http:\/\/eng.kremlin.ru\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dmitry Medvedev<\/a>.\u00a0 She also discussed the evolving nature of Russian democracy and provided insight on demographic changes, Russia&#8217;s relationship to China, the reliance on an oil and gas economy, and the importance of civic society.<\/p>\n<p>Dougherty&#8217;s talk was the second of this Spring&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/academic.scranton.edu\/department\/wml\/schemel-luncheons.html\" target=\"_blank\">Schemel Forum Insights Luncheons<\/a>, a series focused on discussions of world affairs.\u00a0 Next in the series will be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usip.org\/specialists\/j-alexander-thier\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Thier<\/a> of the United States Institute of Peace, who will present on &#8220;Enigma and Dilemma: Our Fraught Relationship with Afghanistan and Pakistan&#8221; on March 19th at 12pm in the Weinberg Memorial Library&#8217;s Heritage Room.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/universityofscrantonlibrary\/4409454632\/in\/photostream\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border:0 none\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2718\/4409454632_7605e6ee7e.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><em>Jill Dougherty speaks in Brennan Hall<\/em><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sondra Myers, director of the University of Scranton&#8217;s Schemel Forum, with CNN foreign affairs correspondent Jill Dougherty CNN foreign affairs correspondent (and Dunmore native!)
