{"id":1780,"date":"2010-04-09T14:01:25","date_gmt":"2010-04-09T18:01:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wmlinfospot.wordpress.com\/?p=1780"},"modified":"2016-07-20T16:10:43","modified_gmt":"2016-07-20T20:10:43","slug":"jay-parini-speaks-on-his-found-novel-the-last-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/2010\/04\/09\/jay-parini-speaks-on-his-found-novel-the-last-station\/","title":{"rendered":"Jay Parini speaks on his &#8220;found novel&#8221;, The Last Station"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1781\" style=\"border:0 none\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/files\/2010\/04\/jayparini2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"395\" height=\"296\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">Scranton native <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/authors\/20807\/Jay_Parini\/index.aspx?authorID=20807\" target=\"_blank\">Jay Parini<\/a> spoke at today&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/academic.scranton.edu\/department\/wml\/schemel.html\" target=\"_blank\">Schemel Forum<\/a> luncheon about his 1990 novel, <a href=\"http:\/\/encore.scranton.edu\/iii\/encore\/record\/C|Rb1326012|Sthe+last+station|Orightresult|X5?lang=eng&amp;suite=def\" target=\"_blank\">The Last Station<\/a>, which was recently transformed into an Oscar-nominated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0824758\/\" target=\"_blank\">film<\/a> by the same name.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">The novel describes the last year of <a href=\"http:\/\/orlabs.oclc.org\/identities\/lccn-n79-68416\" target=\"_blank\">Leo Tolstoy<\/a>&#8216;s life and focuses on the battle between Tolstoy&#8217;s wife Sophia and his disciple <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcat.org\/identities\/lccn-n84-114431\" target=\"_blank\">Chertkov<\/a> for Tolstoy&#8217;s soul.\u00a0 Parini wrote the novel after reading several diaries written by people who lived in Tolstoy&#8217;s house during the tumultuous year.\u00a0 In today&#8217;s talk, Parini described his work as a &#8220;found novel,&#8221; a narrative shaped from the layered viewpoints of those diaries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">Parini has authored 21 books and is currently working on a new novel on the life of Herman Melville.\u00a0\u00a0 When it&#8217;s done, we hope he&#8217;ll find his way back home to Scranton for another visit with the Schemel Forum!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">P.S. <em>The Last Station<\/em> has been shown in cities all over the world &#8211; but not in Scranton.\u00a0 Tolstoy fans will have to drive to Tunkhannock&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dietrichtheater.com\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Deitrich Theater<\/a>, where the film will be shown on three different days (4\/14, 4\/18, and 4\/22) during this month&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dietrichtheater.com\/show.aspx?sid=1612&amp;id=24\" target=\"_blank\">Spring Film Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\"><em>Update: A video of Parini&#8217;s talk is now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HH747nmT-ZQ\" target=\"_blank\">available<\/a> on the University&#8217;s YouTube channel!<\/em><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scranton native Jay Parini spoke at today&#8217;s Schemel Forum luncheon about his 1990 novel, The Last Station, which was recently transformed into an Oscar-nominated film by the same name.
