{"id":2520,"date":"2010-09-02T09:23:35","date_gmt":"2010-09-02T13:23:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wmlinfospot.wordpress.com\/?p=2520"},"modified":"2016-07-20T16:10:11","modified_gmt":"2016-07-20T20:10:11","slug":"university-for-a-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/2010\/09\/02\/university-for-a-day\/","title":{"rendered":"University for a Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/files\/2010\/09\/schemelfall2010.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2521\" style=\"border:0 none\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/files\/2010\/09\/schemelfall2010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"428\" height=\"101\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Take advantage of the opportunity to become college students for the first time or once again, through an innovative program offered by the <a href=\"http:\/\/matrix.scranton.edu\/academics\/wml\/schemel\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Schemel Forum<\/a> at The University of Scranton.\u00a0 <strong>University for a Day<\/strong>, scheduled for <strong>Saturday, October 2<\/strong>, allows participants to attend lectures that explore topics ranging from slavery and Confucian philosophy to university professors\u2019 role in the community and books and argumentation.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sondramyers.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sondra Myers<\/a>, director of the Schemel Forum at The University of Scranton, the program provides an opportunity for attendees to come together to explore new topics and forge new relationships.\u00a0 \u201cParticipants develop friendships through the collaborative community of learning that these programs provide,\u201d said Myers.<\/p>\n<p>University for a Day includes lunch sandwiched between four lectures\/discussions led by university professors and other experts.\u00a0 During one of the programs, University of Scranton professor of philosophy <a href=\"http:\/\/academic.scranton.edu\/faculty\/PANGWHITEA2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ann Pang-White<\/a>, Ph.D., will lead a discussion of eastern philosophy and western philosophers, pose some questions focusing on topics such as ethics and the rights theories, and introduce the concept of care in her presentation titled \u201cWhere East Meets West: Confucian Philosophy and a Post-Modern Ethics of Care.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cBy learning from other cultures, we can reexamine our own philosophical systems,\u201d said Dr. Pang-White. \u201cDespite the differences among the cultures, there is common ground between the east and west, and when the east meets the west, there can be great synergy that develops.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other programs planned are \u201c\u2019Our Peculiar Institution\u2019: Slavery in the South\u201d by Attorney <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mbklaw.com\/professionals\/myers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Morey M. Myers<\/a>; \u201cScaling the University\u2019s Gates: The Professor in the Community\u201d by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newark.rutgers.edu\/ourfaculty\/index.php?sId=kudosDetail&amp;expertId=16\" target=\"_blank\">Clement Price<\/a>, professor of African American studies and founding director of the Institute on Ethnicity, Culture and the Modern Experience at Rutgers University, Newark, N.J.; and \u201cBooks and Argumentation: A Panel Discussion\u201d featuring authors <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hitchensweb.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Christopher Hitchens<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/authors\/20807\/Jay_Parini\/index.aspx?authorID=20807\" target=\"_blank\">Jay Parini<\/a>, and moderated by Morey Myers. \u201cBooks and Argumentation\u201d is held in collaboration with the second annual <a href=\"http:\/\/pagesandplaces.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pages and Places Book Festival<\/a> and will take place at the Scranton Cultural Center. Transportation to the center will be provided.<\/p>\n<p>The University for a Day program will run from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Patrick and Margaret DeNaples Center on The University of Scranton\u2019s campus.\u00a0 Seating is limited and reservations are required to attend.
