{"id":284,"date":"2008-09-25T09:47:51","date_gmt":"2008-09-25T13:47:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wmlinfospot.wordpress.com\/?p=284"},"modified":"2016-07-20T16:14:30","modified_gmt":"2016-07-20T20:14:30","slug":"before-you-vote-surf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/2008\/09\/25\/before-you-vote-surf\/","title":{"rendered":"Before You Vote, Surf"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-288 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/files\/2008\/09\/bt15660-25-2t.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"153\" height=\"153\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmccain.com\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-290 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/files\/2008\/09\/btr2625-2t1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">The 2008 presidential election is coming up quickly &#8212; only 40 more days until November 4th!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">With all of the debates, town halls, news stories, and sound bites, it&#8217;s hard to keep up with all of the information from and about the candidates &#8211; even if you are a devoted CSPAN viewer.\u00a0 And, here in the Library, we encourage everyone to examine information from several sources and think critically about a source&#8217;s accuracy, reliability, validity, and potential bias.\u00a0 So I thought it might be a good idea to highlight a few useful news and fact-checking websites to help you make an informed decision on Election Day.<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorites is the non-partisan Annenberg Political Fact Check, aka <a href=\"http:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/\">FactCheck.org<\/a>.\u00a0 The site reviews political ads and commercials from both campaigns and checks to see whether their statements are accurate.\u00a0 They also answer &#8220;questions of the day,&#8221; submitted by the public, to help you understand the background behind various rumors and accusations &#8212; today&#8217;s is &#8220;Did Sarah Palin make rape victims pay for their own rape kits?&#8221; (Answer: <span>&#8220;Palin&#8217;s police chief in Wasilla did that. Whether Palin supported this is not certain&#8221;).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.washingtonpost.com\/fact-checker\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-286\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/files\/2008\/09\/pinocchio.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"104\" height=\"95\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a recent transplant from Virginia, I&#8217;m also a fan of a Washington Post blog called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.washingtonpost.com\/fact-checker\/\">The Fact Checker<\/a>,&#8221; where blogger Michael Dobbs grades the candidates&#8217; claims.\u00a0 He assigns between 1-4 &#8220;Pinocchios&#8221; to let you know whether a statement was absolutely true, completely false, or somewhere in the middle (for example, true but misleading).\u00a0 The Post also has a neat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-srv\/politics\/interactives\/campaign08\/toolbox.html\">2008 Campaign Toolbox<\/a>, filled with links to up-to-date news, polls, and analysis.\u00a0 CNN has a similar site, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/ELECTION\/2008\/\">Election Center 2008<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, after digesting all of this political information, you&#8217;ll need a break! That&#8217;s when it&#8217;s time to go watch a few episodes of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailyshow.com\/\">The Daily Show.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailyshow.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-287 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/files\/2008\/09\/tds.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"165\" height=\"124\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">Most importantly, though, don&#8217;t forget to register to vote.\u00a0 There&#8217;s been a table for voter registration in DeNaples every day during lunch, or you can download a Pennsylvania voter registration form (and find out more about voting in Pennsylvania) at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.votespa.com\/RegistertoVote\/tabid\/68\/language\/en-US\/Default.aspx\">www.votesPA.com<\/a>, a website published by the Pennsylvania Department of State.\u00a0 And let us know where *you* find your election information, by posting a comment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2008 presidential election is coming up quickly &#8212; only 40 more days until November 4th!
