{"id":3300,"date":"2011-02-01T11:40:47","date_gmt":"2011-02-01T15:40:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wmlinfospot.wordpress.com\/?p=3300"},"modified":"2016-07-20T16:09:25","modified_gmt":"2016-07-20T20:09:25","slug":"wikipedia-facts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/2011\/02\/01\/wikipedia-facts\/","title":{"rendered":"Wikipedia Facts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to a study that appeared on the front page of the January 31st edition of the <em>New York Times<\/em>,\u00a0 males in their mid-twenties account for 87% of\u00a0 the articles written for <em>Wikipedia<\/em>.\u00a0 Over 3.5 million articles in over 250 languages comprise this evolving decade-old encyclopedia, which rises to the top of almost any <em>Google<\/em> search one conducts.<\/p>\n<p>Early in 2010, researchers at a joint center of the United Nations University and Maastricht University collaborated with the\u00a0 Wikipedia Foundation to assess the demographics of\u00a0 contributors to the website.\u00a0 Now that the profile has been released, Sue Gardner, the executive director of the foundation, has set a goal of raising the gender equity of contributors to 25% by 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Several industry analysts and organizational behaviorists have tried to suggest theories to explain the gender differences.\u00a0 Gardner herself believes that &#8220;the traditions of the computer world and an obsessive fact-loving realm dominated by men and uncomfortable for women&#8221; has created the disparity.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the explanation, the facts speak for themselves.\u00a0 So\u00a0 the next time you consult the online encyclopedia for a quick refresher on a fact, take note of the article&#8217;s\u00a0 authorship.\u00a0 And better yet, women &#8220;know-it-alls&#8221;
