{"id":339,"date":"2008-10-16T09:00:02","date_gmt":"2008-10-16T13:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wmlinfospot.wordpress.com\/?p=339"},"modified":"2016-07-20T16:14:18","modified_gmt":"2016-07-20T20:14:18","slug":"going-digital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/2008\/10\/16\/going-digital\/","title":{"rendered":"Going digital"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_340\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-340\" style=\"width: 404px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.archive.org\/details\/prominentmenscra00stod\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-340\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/files\/2008\/10\/samplepage.jpg\" alt=\"A page from &quot;Prominent Men of Scranton and Vicinity,&quot; one of WML's newly digitized books\" width=\"404\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-340\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A page from &#8220;Prominent Men of Scranton and Vicinity&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This fall, the Weinberg Memorial Library is one of 14 institutions participating in a mass digitization pilot project.\u00a0 The program is headed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.palinet.org\/index.aspx\">PALINET<\/a>, a network of more than 600 libraries, archives, and museums\u00a0 in the mid-Atlantic region, with a goal of making electronic copies of interesting books available to the public via the internet.<\/p>\n<p>So far, we&#8217;ve had six local history books digitized by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archive.org\">Internet Archive<\/a>. \u00a0 All six were written before 1923, which means means that they&#8217;re in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Public_domain\">public domain<\/a> &#8211; so we can post them on the internet without violating anyone&#8217;s intellectual property rights.\u00a0 What&#8217;s fantastic about the digitized books is that:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>they&#8217;re now accessible to anyone, anywhere, anytime (while the physical books are only available to people who visit the WML Special Collections library in person, during limited hours), and<\/li>\n<li>they&#8217;re full-text searchable!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Check out our books on the Internet Archive website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archive.org\/search.php?query=contributor%3A(scranton)\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 You can browse through the books using the &#8220;flip book&#8221; viewer, and you can also download PDF copies of each book.\u00a0 If your family is from the area, be sure to use the full text search box in the flip book viewer to search for your last name &#8211; the books are great resources for genealogists.\u00a0 Or just look at the great pictures, like this 1882 line drawing of the proposed design for the Lackawanna County Courthouse from &#8220;Memorial of the Erection of Lackawanna County&#8221; (if it looks a bit different from what you see on the Square today, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lackawannacounty.org\/ViewEventDetails.aspx?EventID=162\">it is<\/a>!) &#8212;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_342\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-342\" style=\"width: 368px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.archive.org\/details\/memorialoferecti00mcku\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-342\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/files\/2008\/10\/memorialoferecti00mcku_0008.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Proposed Lackawanna County Courthouse, 1882\" width=\"368\" height=\"350\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-342\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Proposed Lackawanna County Courthouse, 1882<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This fall, the Weinberg Memorial Library is one of 14 institutions participating in a mass digitization pilot project.\u00a0 The program is headed by PALINET, a network of more than 600 libraries, archives, and museums\u00a0 in the mid-Atlantic region, with a goal of making electronic copies of interesting books available to the public via the internet.
