Distinguished Author Award at a gala dinner with an oriental theme on Saturday, March 19 in the DeNaples Center Ballroom.\u00a0 Steve Berry spoke to the audience about how he became a writer.\u00a0 He stated that he did not begin writing until he was 35 years old.\u00a0 He said that \u201cevery writer has a little voice in their head\u201d that keeps nagging at them to write and is not satisfied until they start.\u00a0 He started writing and kept at it for a number of years, going to a weekly writers\u2019 criticism group, to improve his work.\u00a0 And then he got lucky.\u00a0 He got an agent which can actually be more difficult than getting a publisher.\u00a0 He got 88 rejections and then he got a break.\u00a0 In spring 2002, Doubleday bought a book from an unknown author.\u00a0 The book turned out to be <em>The Da Vinci Code<\/em> by Dan Brown.\u00a0 It turned out to be a blockbuster hit.\u00a0 Because of the genre that he writes, mystery thrillers, the next thing he knew Berry was signed by a publisher.\u00a0 The main character of many of his books, detective Cotton Malone, is featured in his most recent work, <em>The Emperor\u2019s Tomb. <\/em>Berry\u2019s books have been translated into multiple languages and are now in 51 countries.\u00a0 Along with his successful writing career, Berry\u2019s love of history has led him and his wife Elizabeth, to create a foundation:\u00a0 History Matters (http:\/\/www.steveberry.org\/berry-history.htm) to help raise funds for the preservation and restoration of historical treasures.\u00a0 His advice for anyone who is writing or wanting to write is to: \u201cstick in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Steve Berry was presented with the Royden B.
