{"id":5488,"date":"2013-02-08T08:41:32","date_gmt":"2013-02-08T13:41:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/?p=5488"},"modified":"2016-07-20T16:06:55","modified_gmt":"2016-07-20T20:06:55","slug":"american-hands-exhibit-and-schemel-forum-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/2013\/02\/08\/american-hands-exhibit-and-schemel-forum-event\/","title":{"rendered":"American Hands Exhibit and Schemel Forum Event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/02\/Hands-Exhibit-Digital-Signage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5489\" alt=\"American Hands Exhibit\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/02\/Hands-Exhibit-Digital-Signage.jpg\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" \/><\/a>The Library&#8217;s Heritage Room is currently hosting\u00a0<em>American Hands: A Visual Celebration of Traditional Tradespeople,<\/em> a traveling exhibit of work by photographer Sally Wiener Grotta.<\/p>\n<p><em>American Hands<\/em> is Sally Wiener Grotta&#8217;s ongoing narrative visual celebration of those individuals who are keeping alive the traditional trades that built our country&#8217;s diverse culture. She has documented the work of artisans including a spinner, weaver, blacksmith, bookbinder and others. She has returned to their workshops over the course of months and years to document the different stages of their creations.\u00a0 She documents the craft processes as well as the personalities of the individual tradespeople.<\/p>\n<p>Sally began the exhibit as <i>Pennsylvania Hands<\/i>.\u00a0 The constantly changing exhibit has been seen around the state and has now become a national project and renamed <i>American Hands<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Sally is widely considered to be a pioneer of digital photography and computer graphics.\u00a0 She has served as chapter president for the American Society of Media Photographers and has traveled on assignment to every continent including Antarctica.\u00a0 Sally co-authored (with Daniel Grotta) the groundbreaking work, <i>Digital Imaging for Visual Artists<\/i> which is considered one of the first important works on the subject. The <i>PC Magazine Guide to Digital Photography <\/i>and The <i>PC Magazine Digital SLR Photography Solutions <\/i>are among their other books.
