{"id":711,"date":"2010-11-17T09:18:52","date_gmt":"2010-11-17T14:18:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/"},"modified":"2010-11-17T09:18:52","modified_gmt":"2010-11-17T14:18:52","slug":"data-storage-and-backup","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/faq\/data-storage-and-backup\/","title":{"rendered":"Data Storage and Backup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We  all have some really important and sensitive information on our  computer. \u00a0And when it crashes, we&#8217;re in deep trouble. \u00a0Backing up is  critical for everything that we do in our roles as faculty members, but not everyone knows  what tools exist for this. We need to have something available<em> (&#8220;Have a server available for backing up data on a regular basis&#8221;),<\/em> and someone needs to show us how to use it (<em>&#8220;Advice on how and what is available for backing up our systems&#8221;<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>In  fact, this is one of the primary purposes for <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/royaldrive.scranton.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Royal Drive<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 Royal Drive is IR&#8217;s recommended backup option for faculty, and you access it either via the web (<a href=\"http:\/\/royaldrive.scranton.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">royaldrive.scranton.edu<\/a>) or by using a <a href=\"http:\/\/academic.scranton.edu\/department\/training\/qtjune09.html\">desktop client<\/a>.\u00a0 Computer Training Coordinator Vince Yanusauskas has written up a Quick Start guide for Royal Drive 7.0 (available in <a href=\"http:\/\/academic.scranton.edu\/department\/training\/Royal_Drive-7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">PDF format<\/a>)  and also offers regular trainings on Royal Drive for all University  faculty and staff members.\u00a0 Royal Drive is secure (files are encrypted),  robust (it&#8217;s backed up regularly), and is freely available to  University faculty.\u00a0 Storage space is initially limited, but <a href=\"..\/2010\/10\/05\/how-to-request-more-space-on-royal-drive\/\" target=\"_blank\">you can request more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are other options for backup, though many have disadvantages.\u00a0 Some faculty on campus use third party backup services &#8211; like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dropbox<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jungledisk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jungle Disk<\/a>, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carbonite.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Carbonite<\/a> &#8211; while others use external hard drives.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re using one of these non-Royal Drive options, don&#8217;t forget that <strong>you need to be especially careful if you have sensitive data<\/strong> (e.g., anything covered by <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.scranton.edu\/content.php?catoid=8&amp;navoid=162\" target=\"_blank\">FERPA<\/a>) to store.\u00a0 Tony Maszeroski, the   University&#8217;s Information Security Manager, advises faculty to use   full-disk encryption (check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truecrypt.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">TrueCrypt<\/a> if your external backup device  doesn&#8217;t come with full-disk encryption built in).<\/p>\n<p>TAG is keeping track of best practices for data storage that we&#8217;ll disseminate to the faculty. \u00a0If you have  any specific thoughts, or want to look at the information that we have  available at present, please visit our page on <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/current-problems\/backup\/\" target=\"_blank\">Backup<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Back to <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/2010\/11\/17\/response-to-survey-comments-top-faculty-concerns\/\" target=\"_self\">Top Faculty Concerns<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We all have some really important and sensitive information on our computer. \u00a0And when it crashes, we&#8217;re in deep trouble. \u00a0Backing up is critical for everything that we do in our roles as faculty members, but not everyone knows what tools exist for this.
