{"id":1044,"date":"2011-04-04T13:44:54","date_gmt":"2011-04-04T17:44:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/?p=1044"},"modified":"2011-04-04T13:44:54","modified_gmt":"2011-04-04T17:44:54","slug":"more-on-the-mobile-app","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/2011\/04\/04\/more-on-the-mobile-app\/","title":{"rendered":"More on the Mobile App"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TAG has gotten a few questions and heard a few concerns about the new Scranton iPhone and Android App.\u00a0 Just thought we&#8217;d post some extra information about it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are two different mobile tools available &#8211; one is the <strong>mobile app<\/strong>, which is available for iPhones through the <a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/the-university-of-scranton\/id425136996?mt=8\">App Store<\/a> and for Android devices through the <a href=\"https:\/\/market.android.com\/details?id=com.u360mobile.scranton&amp;feature=search_result\">Android Market<\/a>.\u00a0 The other is the <strong>mobile website<\/strong>, which you can view from any internet browser at <a href=\"http:\/\/m.scranton.edu\/\">http:\/\/m.scranton.edu<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Both the app and the mobile website are optional &#8211; you can use them if you find them convenient, but no faculty member (or anyone else) is obligated to use them.<\/li>\n<li>The app does access some data from your phone in order to make the features work.\u00a0 For the Android version of the app, these are spelled out in the <a href=\"https:\/\/market.android.com\/details?id=com.u360mobile.scranton&amp;feature=search_result\">Android Market page<\/a> under Permissions.\u00a0 The Permissions page mentions that &#8220;malicious applications&#8221; can use those permissions to do bad things &#8211; this is boilerplate language from the Android Market, essentially warning you not to download and install apps from developers that you don&#8217;t trust.\u00a0 In this case, the app is coming from the University via Straxis Technology and is not malicious.<\/li>\n<li>The app can use your GPS location in order to place you on a map for the Campus Tour feature.
