{"id":3162,"date":"2013-11-11T16:11:17","date_gmt":"2013-11-11T21:11:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/?p=3162"},"modified":"2013-11-11T16:11:17","modified_gmt":"2013-11-11T21:11:17","slug":"ecar-study-of-undergraduate-students-and-information-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/2013\/11\/11\/ecar-study-of-undergraduate-students-and-information-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last spring, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scranton.edu\/pir\/institutional-research\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Office of Institutional Research<\/a> administered the national\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.educause.edu\/library\/resources\/ecar-study-undergraduate-students-and-information-technology-2013\" target=\"_blank\">ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology<\/a> on campus in order to gather information about students&#8217; perceptions and desires relating to technology at the University. Of the 3,889 undergraduate students who received the survey, 619 (15.9%) responded.<\/p>\n<p>This morning, several members of TAG met with administrators from Academic Affairs and Planning and Information Resources (PIR) to discuss the survey results. (See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scranton.edu\/pir\/institutional-research\/institutional-survey-reports\/institutional-survey-reports-page.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">PIR&#8217;s website<\/a> for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scranton.edu\/pir\/institutional-research\/institutional-survey-reports\/ECAR_2013_Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">summary report<\/a> as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scranton.edu\/pir\/institutional-research\/institutional-survey-reports\/ECAR-Presentation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">presentation slides<\/a> on key findings. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.educause.edu\/ir\/library\/pdf\/SI\/ESI1302.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">survey instrument<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.educause.edu\/ir\/library\/pdf\/ERS1302\/ERS1302.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">national results<\/a> are available from EDUCAUSE.)<\/p>\n<p>A few discussion points of particular relevance for TAG and other faculty:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>95% of students reported owning laptops (up from 89% in 2010). 84% of students reported having a smartphone.<\/li>\n<li>When asked how many of their instructors effectively use technology, students responded: &#8220;All&#8221; &#8211; 9%, &#8220;Most&#8221; &#8211; 45%, &#8220;Some&#8221; &#8211; 45%, &#8220;None&#8221; &#8211; 1%.<\/li>\n<li>63% of students would like their professors to use more lecture capture.<\/li>\n<li>53% of student respondents would like their professors to use the LMS (learning management system &#8211; e.g., Angel or Desire2Learn) more.<\/li>\n<li>61% would prefer courses with some online components.<\/li>\n<li>86% of students felt that they were either banned or discouraged from using smartphones in class.<\/li>\n<li>Some students reported that they wanted their instructors to increase the integrated use of laptops (52%), tablets (30%), and smartphones (30%) in the classroom.<\/li>\n<li>11% of students agreed and 2% of students strongly agreed with the statement, &#8220;I skip classes when materials from course lectures are available online.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last spring, the Office of Institutional Research administered the national\u00a0 ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology on campus in order to gather information about students&#8217; perceptions and desires relating to technology at the University.
