{"id":584,"date":"2010-11-08T10:20:25","date_gmt":"2010-11-08T15:20:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/?p=584"},"modified":"2010-11-08T10:20:25","modified_gmt":"2010-11-08T15:20:25","slug":"the-straight-dope-on-faculty-websites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/2010\/11\/08\/the-straight-dope-on-faculty-websites\/","title":{"rendered":"The Straight Dope on Faculty Websites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Update: This explanation has been superseded by <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/2011\/10\/24\/faculty-websites\/\">&#8220;Faculty Websites: Know Your Options,&#8221;<\/a> posted on 10\/24\/11.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s been a lot of <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/2010\/09\/09\/cms-faculty-friend-or-foe\/\" target=\"_blank\">confusion and concern<\/a> about faculty websites lately.\u00a0 With a generous tip of the hat to TAG&#8217;s friends in <a href=\"http:\/\/matrix.scranton.edu\/alum\/al_public_relations.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Public Relations<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scranton.edu\/ctle\" target=\"_blank\">CTLE<\/a>, here&#8217;s what faculty need to know about creating personal websites (note: this post does not apply to departmental websites).<\/p>\n<p>Faculty are NOT required to use the CMS for their personal websites.\u00a0 There are actually three different options for faculty members.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Use the CMS.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can<strong> CHOOSE<\/strong> to use the CMS for your personal website.<\/li>\n<li>Using the CMS, you&#8217;ll have two templates to work from.\u00a0 There&#8217;s the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/royaldrive.scranton.edu\/xythoswfs\/webui\/_xy-2568945_1-t_tk2kXVQl\" target=\"_blank\">Basic<\/a>&#8221; template, which is simple and (let&#8217;s be honest!) pretty ugly, and there&#8217;s the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/royaldrive.scranton.edu\/xythoswfs\/webui\/_xy-2568944_1-t_L11vN59g\" target=\"_blank\">Advanced<\/a>&#8221; which is prettier and more customizable.\u00a0 Note that neither template is branded with\u00a0 University of Scranton colors or logos.<\/li>\n<li>PR has promised to send along more information on how faculty can request space on the CMS server for a personal website.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll update this post when I hear back from them.<\/li>\n<li>Should you choose to use the CMS, YOU are in control of your content.\u00a0 PR doesn&#8217;t have any control over what you post.\u00a0 All that is expected is that you follow the University&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/academic.scranton.edu\/department\/helpdesk\/html_old\/facultypolicy.html\" target=\"_blank\">Code of Responsible Computing<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Use the academic server.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If\u00a0 you want to put your personal website on the academic server, stop by the CTLE\u00a0 (either <a href=\"mailto:mchalea1@scranton.edu\" target=\"_blank\">make an appointment<\/a> or walk in during <a href=\"http:\/\/matrix.scranton.edu\/academics\/ctle\/techcons\/contact-us.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">lab hours<\/a>) and check in with one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/matrix.scranton.edu\/academics\/ctle\/Techcons\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">TechCons<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A TechCon will set up space for you on the academic server.<\/li>\n<li>Once you coordinate your log in with the TechCons, you have the freedom to upload any HTML files you like. So if you want, you can design your own website with a WSIWYG editor (like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/dreamweaver\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dreamweaver<\/a> or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/expression\/\" target=\"_blank\">Expression<\/a>, etc) and have it look however you like.<\/li>\n<li>If you want help building your website, you can <strong>choose<\/strong> to have the TechCons help you.\u00a0 They have several templates that they work off of (<a href=\"https:\/\/royaldrive.scranton.edu\/xythoswfs\/webui\/_xy-2568950_1-t_ByC7VSTb\" target=\"_blank\">see<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/royaldrive.scranton.edu\/xythoswfs\/webui\/_xy-2568947_1-t_c8Nk4pWD\" target=\"_blank\">a<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/royaldrive.scranton.edu\/xythoswfs\/webui\/_xy-2568949_1-t_zrJ8aFlP\" target=\"_blank\">few<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/royaldrive.scranton.edu\/xythoswfs\/webui\/_xy-2568946_1-t_uU3gj7dP\" target=\"_blank\">examples<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/royaldrive.scranton.edu\/xythoswfs\/webui\/_xy-2568948_1-t_FMzwuwkL\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).\u00a0 They&#8217;ll do a prototype to get you started, and you can maintain it from there.<\/li>\n<li>If you want a LOT of help on your website, the TechCons can also help you update the content when you need to.<\/li>\n<li>You may hear about changes happening on the academic server.\u00a0 The academic server is in an environment that&#8217;s no longer supported, so it is going to be replaced sometime in Spring 2011.\u00a0 This won&#8217;t have any noticeable effect on your website &#8211; your files will just be migrated to the new server.\u00a0 At some point, IR and\/or PR will probably encourage everyone with files on the academic server to review their content and delete any outdated files.\u00a0 This is just a request and a chance to get rid of old web pages- anything you do not choose to delete will be migrated over.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3.
