{"id":792,"date":"2010-11-30T16:21:50","date_gmt":"2010-11-30T21:21:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/?p=792"},"modified":"2010-11-30T16:21:50","modified_gmt":"2010-11-30T21:21:50","slug":"it-matters-winter-2010-issue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/2010\/11\/30\/it-matters-winter-2010-issue\/","title":{"rendered":"IT Matters Winter 2010 Issue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The new issue of IR\u2019s <strong>IT Matters newsletter<\/strong> is available in <a href=\"https:\/\/royaldrive.scranton.edu\/xythoswfs\/webui\/_xy-2838351_1-t_Y67Pm148\" target=\"_blank\">PDF format<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As in the last issue, many of the articles deal with issues we\u2019ve already been discussing here on the TAG site, but there&#8217;s a few new items of interest:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>See p. 1 for a note from VP Jerry DeSanto on the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/2010\/11\/04\/campus-email-will-switch-to-microsoft-liveedu\/\" target=\"_blank\">email transition<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>P. 3 has a quick update from the Mobile Applications team about the upcoming University <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/category\/mobile\/\" target=\"_blank\">mobile<\/a> app<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>On p. 4, Jim Franceschelli reminds everyone that completed Microcomputer Budget Forms need to be in by December 13 &#8212; so <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/faq\/faculty-computers-and-equipment\/\" target=\"_blank\">faculty members need to get any requests to their department chairs<\/a> ASAP!<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Also on p. 4: Some notes about Microsoft Forefront, which will be replacing McAfee Anti-Virus.\u00a0 IR is beginning deployment this December, and\u00a0<strong>McAfee will be removed from University computers <\/strong>by May 2011 at the latest.<\/li>\n<li>P. 6: The Computer Maintenance Center has set a goal of having <strong>all four computer technicians <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/faq\/mac-support\/\" target=\"_blank\">Apple<\/a> Certified<\/strong> by the end of December 2010.\u00a0 So far, two of the four (Glen and Karl) have passed their certification tests.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/2010\/10\/19\/more-it-forum-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\">Standard user accounts<\/a><\/strong> are mentioned on p. 7, but no further details on what kinds of software we will and own&#8217;t be able to install on our own computers.<\/li>\n<li>My.Scranton is being updated &#8211; there will be a brand new version out, with an &#8220;improved user interface,&#8221; around Fall 2011 (p. 9).<\/li>\n<li>Vince Merkel explains <strong>thin clients<\/strong> on p. 11.<\/li>\n<li>Gus Fernandez goes through the steps of how the <strong>Computer Security Incident Response Team<\/strong> responds to infected computers (p. 14).<\/li>\n<li>Information Security Manager Tony Maszeroski has some pointers for us on <strong>phishing scams<\/strong> on p. 15.\u00a0 This is a must-read for faculty &#8212; TAG has heard from IR that faculty members have fallen for phishing scams in the past.<\/li>\n<li>On p. 16, Cal Krzywiec reports that the University is planning to increase our <strong>wireless coverage<\/strong> from 300 wireless access points to closer to 1000. Wahoo! And the wireless network will be upgraded to accommodate higher demand.
