{"id":922,"date":"2011-02-15T14:09:54","date_gmt":"2011-02-15T19:09:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/?p=922"},"modified":"2011-02-15T14:09:54","modified_gmt":"2011-02-15T19:09:54","slug":"email-transition-a-note-about-old-email","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/2011\/02\/15\/email-transition-a-note-about-old-email\/","title":{"rendered":"Email Transition: A Note about Old Email"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TAG has heard some concerns among faculty lately about the upcoming <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/2010\/11\/04\/campus-email-will-switch-to-microsoft-liveedu\/\">email transition<\/a> to Microsoft Live @ Edu.\u00a0 Most of the concerns have centered around making sure old email can be migrated into the new system.\u00a0 Here are a few clarifications:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you use RoyalMail and Thunderbird, there are two places email can be stored.\u00a0 Each faculty member currently has 200 MB of space on RoyalMail &#8211; that email is stored on an on-campus server.\u00a0 But many people have additional email stored in &#8220;local mail&#8221; folders &#8211; this email is stored on your computer&#8217;s hard drive.<\/li>\n<li>Email stored on the RoyalMail server (that 200 MB) will be migrated into the new Microsoft Live @ Edu cloud environment by IR.<\/li>\n<li>Instead of the old 200 MB quota on the RoyalMail server, the Microsoft Live @ Edu system allows each user to store 10 GB worth of email.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll soon be sending out some instructions for how to figure out how much email you have stored on your local system so you can tell how close you are to that limit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>There will be a way for faculty to migrate their local mail from their hard drive to the Microsoft Live @ Edu system<\/strong>.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t have specifics from IR yet, but faculty will not lose access to their old email.\u00a0 Faculty, as end users, will have to actively do something to help move their mail once the transition time comes &#8211; but we don&#8217;t have to do anything yet.\u00a0 During the transition, CTLE TechCons will be on hand to help faculty with the migration.<\/li>\n<li>IR is not against faculty <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/2010\/09\/30\/using-gmail-to-read-uofs-email\/\">migrating their email to Gmail<\/a> instead of using Microsoft Live @ Edu, as long as we keep in mind issues of Personally Identifiable Information (PII).\u00a0 The University has to comply with increasingly strict federal laws, like <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.scranton.edu\/content.php?catoid=6&amp;navoid=109&amp;hl=ferpa&amp;returnto=search\" target=\"_blank\">FERPA<\/a>,  that protect PII.\u00a0 Any information dealing with a student&#8217;s \u201ceducational record\u201d should not be stored on Google&#8217;s servers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The bottom line is &#8211; don&#8217;t panic, you&#8217;ll still have access to your old email.\u00a0 If you have questions or other concerns about the email transition, please let TAG know!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TAG has heard some concerns among faculty lately about the upcoming email transition to Microsoft Live @ Edu.\u00a0 Most of the concerns have centered around making sure old email can be migrated into the new system.\u00a0 Here are a few clarifications: If you use RoyalMail and Thunderbird, there are two places email can be stored.\u00a0 [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":80,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[485,488],"tags":[781,625],"class_list":["post-922","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-announcements","category-email","tag-email","tag-microsoft-liveedu"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/922","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/80"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=922"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/922\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=922"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=922"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.scranton.edu\/tag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=922"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
