Email Capacity

Faculty members noted in the survey comments that they’d like “larger capacity for email” – and this isn’t a surprise, considering that our my.scranton email system only allows about 200 MB of email to be stored on the server.  If you’re an avid emailer like we TAG members tend to be, you can fill up this quota in under two months.

Some faculty have avoided this quota issue altogether by forwarding or otherwise importing their University of Scranton email to another email provider (like Gmail) – however, the Information Security office has expressed concern about faculty storing their my.scranton credentials on an external system, as well as the potential security issues involved with storing University email on non-University servers (find a draft document on these concerns here).

The good news is that each faculty member’s email storage capacity is about to soar, from 200MB to 10GB – that is, when we make the transition to cloud-based email using Microsoft Live@Edu in Summer 2011.

In the meantime, faculty members can request additional storage space for email by contacting the Technology Support Center.  According to the TSC, increases of up to 200 MB aren’t a problem.  If you still need more space, the TSC’s recommendation is you should move email, particularly messages with large attachments, to your local drive.
