Academic Technology Plan

8 03 2011

The Provost has invited members of TAG to participate in a spring break retreat with the Deans Group in order to start developing an academic technology plan.

We’d like TAG members to be able to come to the retreat with ideas in mind. I’ll be reviewing some academic technology plans from other universities this week in preparation, but wanted to toss out a few general questions to get some feedback from all of you:

What should be in an academic technology plan?

Where should the University head in terms of technology?

What should be the goals of technology use on campus?

What questions should we discuss with the Deans?

If anyone’s interested in talking face-to-face about ideas for the plan before break, please let me know!

What exactly is the purpose of this plan? If this is in some way linked to the GE proposals, I would encourage no participation until those have been voted on/discussed.

Good question, Bryan. As far as I know, the purpose of the plan is still up for discussion – and that should probably be one of the first questions we talk about at the retreat.

I haven’t heard anything about it being connected to the GE proposals. I think there’s just a sense that Academic Affairs needs some sort of strategic approach to technology. I’ll post a clarification if I can get some more information from the Provost’s office.

“Where should the University head in terms of technology?”

I’d like to see a model that encourages innovation when it comes to technology and pedagogy, and technology and improving student and faculty services–and a model with the resources to support this kind of innovation.

(…she says, not entirely sure of what such a model would look like… :) But in terms of characteristics and overarching goals to advocate make their way into this kind of Academic Technology Plan, this would be key for me.)

It’s exciting TAG has been invited to participate in this process! Thanks for keeping us in the loop on it.
