Internet Outage – Monday 6/14

11 06 2010

Announcement of a service outage, from Network Infrastructure (emphasis ours):

Internet service will be unavailable between Monday, June 14th at 11:00pm and Tuesday, June 15th at 6:00am as network providers relocate their premise equipment at Alumni Memorial Hall.  While the maintenance window is seven hours in duration, the actual service outage is likely to be shorter.  During the service outage, on-campus users will not have access to Internet sites and services and users outside of the campus will be unable to reach University of Scranton sites and services.  The University of Scranton maintains an alternate Web site to ensure that external users can continue to get some essential content.

New PIR website

The Division of Planning and Information Resources home page is being converted over to the University’s new Hannon Hill content management software – and the new page is worth taking a look.  Some content that might interest faculty:

There’s also other content still in the works – like information on New Initiatives (including handheld devices), and a Division Organizational Chart.

Google enters LMS market?

24 05 2010

There’s been some buzz on Twitter this week about Google’s May 19 announcement of CloudCourse, an “enterprise application in the cloud” that looks like Google’s first step into the learning management system market.

CloudCourse an open source piece of software that offers calendaring (integrated with Google Calendar), waitlist management and approval features – so at this point it seems like the primary focus is on course scheduling.  It’s unclear whether CloudCourse will or could evolve into a competitor for Blackboard.

Angel Upgrade scheduled for June 1-2

18 05 2010

IT Development and Applications just shared this announcement that ANGEL will be down on June 1 and 2 for the upgrade to v. 7.4:

The ANGEL Learning Management System will be unavailable between Tuesday, June 1 at 7:00am and Wednesday, June 2 at 4:30pm. The downtime is necessary to install a new version of ANGEL – 7.4. *Please note that all existing course content (including content rolled over from previous courses) will be automatically migrated to ANGEL 7.4. *

In version 7.4, creating and evaluating assessments have been improved with the addition of Grading Rubrics and an enhanced Gradebook. The Learning Object Repositories (LORs) have been enhanced; there is now support for rich media content in discussion forums, pages, and assessments.

*Grading rubrics* provide instructors and other assessment evaluators with an efficient method of consistently grading subjective learner submissions for drop boxes and manually-graded assessment questions. Grading rubrics can be created individually for ANGEL courses, or copied or linked into ANGEL courses from Learning Object Repositories (LORs). Students also benefit from the use of grading rubrics in that they can see, in advance, the criteria against which their assignment will be evaluated.

The *Gradebook* has a more intuitive and user-friendly interface. Among the new features available are: Grade Reports, Grade Entry Grid, Submissions Manager, and an Ungraded Items nugget.

  • The *Grade Reports* allows you to generate grade reports based on various parameters such as categories and dates. Each report can be saved and accessed from the Reports nugget in the gradebook.
  • The *Grade Entry Grid *makes it easier to enter and edit grades by directly typing them into the Grade Entry Grid.
  • The* Submissions Manager* provides an interface in which you can enter a grade for each assignment directly from the gradebook.  Additionally, instructors can view assignments that have ungraded submissions associated with them.
  • The *Ungraded Items nugget* conditionally displays assignments that require manual grading.

The *Learning Object Repositories* (LORs) incorporates the ability to aggregate user data from several courses. For example, an assessment can be deployed across multiple sections of the same course with combined submission information stored in the LOR.

The HTML editor in discussions, pages, and assessments provides tools to integrate web-based *rich media support* such as YouTube videos, Picasa images, and other Web 2.0 content.

The Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence will offer an ANGEL 7.4 Enhancements workshop on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 from 10:00am-12:00pm to highlight the new features. Please register online at: http://www.scranton.edu/ctleregistration

Faculty and Social Media

17 05 2010

Earlier this month, publishing company Pearson released a survey of college faculty and their use of social media. The survey showed that most faculty members use social networking accounts, though only around 30% of faculty use those networks to communicate with students.  Video and podcasts are popular for in-class use and for personal use.

Let us know how you’re using social media in the classroom (or how you’d like to use it) and what campus resources you need to support that goal in your teaching!

The UofS Technology Advisory Group will make its official debut at 3:15pm this Friday, May 11, 2010 at the monthly meeting of the Faculty Senate in Brennan 500.  We’ll be discussing TAG’s purpose, goals, and next steps, and we’ll also be soliciting recommendations for new members.  All full-time faculty members are invited to attend.

TAG is designed to be a flexible advisory group, sponsored by the Faculty Senate and reporting to the Senate’s Academic Support Committee.   Many thanks to outgoing Senate President Rob Waldeck for helping us get started, and we’re looking forward to working with incoming President Gerry Biberman!
