Dr. Sean Brennan, Dr. Shuhua Fan, and Dr. Adam Pratt all participated in the recent gathering of the American Historical Association in Atlanta, Georgia in January 2016.  Dr. Fan presented, “Francis Knight, President Eliot, Ko Kunhua, and the Harvard Chinese Class, 1877-1882.”  Dr. Brennan commented on a panel entitled “European Catholic Thought in Modern Europe.”  Dr. Pratt participated in the “Ask an Assistant Professor” booth which was staffed by a rotating cadre of junior faculty from a variety of institutions who answered questions about what being an assistant professor is really like in various settings.

The Hope Horn Gallery Presents Former Scranton Mayor Ezra Ripple’s Civil War Memoir

During the 1890s, Civil War veteran and Scranton mayor Ezra Ripple presented public lectures about his experiences as a prisoner of war in camps at Andersonville, Georgia, and Florence, South Carolina, in 1864-1865.  In addition, Ripple commissioned Civil War illustrator James Taylor to produce drawings and magic lantern slides based on his memoirs. Presented in conjunction with the 150th anniversaries of the Civil War and the city of Scranton, this project is co-sponsored by the Lackawanna Historical Society and a Lackawanna County Community Arts and Culture Grant, a program of Lackawanna County Commissioners Jim Wansacz, Patrick M. O’Malley, and Edward G. Staback.

The exhibit runs through March 11, 2016

Scanning Away!

As part of the City of Scranton’s yearlong 150th Anniversary celebration, the Royals Historical Society and Adam Pratt’s History 140 class participated in the Weinberg Memorial Library Scanathon in October. Along with community partners the Lackawanna Historical Society and the Scranton Public Library, the group successfully digitized materials from the Scranton Family Papers Collection.  Check out complete coverage on the Library’s blog.

University of Scranton History Alum Helps Anchor NBC’s Coverage of the Papal Visit

12043149_954538807918580_7536644578463540888_nNotre Dame Professor Kathleen Sprows Cummings, University of Scranton Class of 1993, recently appeared on NBC and MSNBC along with Chris Matthews to offer coverage of Pope Francis’s visit to the United States. Professor Cummings is an associate professor of American studies and the William W. and Anna Jean Cushwa Director of the Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism.

Dr. Kennedy on Boston (in the New York Times)

14cityhall-01-master675Dr. Lawrence Kennedy was recently quoted in a New York Times article entitled “By Rolling Out the Green Carpet, Boston Enlivens City Hall Plaza.”  Dr. Kennedy’s research on Boston includes his book Planning the City upon a Hill: Boston since 1630.  The full article can be found here.

Dr. Shaffern Celebrates Twenty Years at the University with a New Publication

This past spring Dr. Robert Shaffern was inducted into the Order of Pro Deo et Universitate for having completed 20 years on our faculty.  Shortly thereafter his article, “Death and the Afterlife in the Middle Ages,” has now been published in a volume entitled The Routledge History of Medieval Christianity, 1050-1500. This volume is edited by Robert N. Swanson, Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the University of Birmingham, UK.  Clearly after 20 years he’s still got it.  Congratulations Bob!

Dr. Shaffern addresses the German Historical Institute in Rome

Dr. Robert Shaffern addressed the German Historical Institute in Rome on June 9. This institute, founded by the Prussian government in 1888, is the oldest of its kind in Europe. His lecture, entitled “Tetzel and the Mendicant Orders,” was part of an international assembly recalling the 600th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. Also the German ambassador to the Holy See hosted a dinner honoring the conferees. The evening included a concert of late medieval Italian church music.

A Summer Trip to Italy

Drs Roy Domenico and Robert Shaffern led twenty-two intrepid students of the University of Scranton on their biannual visit to Italy, June 2-27. The group first toured Pompeii and Naples, then spent a week in Rome, where they saw the Colosseum, St. Peter’s and the Forum, among other sites. They also visited Florence, Assisi and Venice. The tour wrapped up with visits to Milan and beautiful Lake Orta, in the foothills of the Alps.
