IT Forum: Collaborative Classroom Tools on Feb. 27

Please join the Division of Information Technology for our next IT Forum on Tuesday, February 27 from 11.30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Brennan Hall 509 (Rose Room).

This informative and interactive presentation will introduce attendees to Collaborative Technologies and Active Learning Classrooms (ALC’s):

  • Jason Wimmer, Manager of Academic and Media Services will discuss ALC’s and collaborative technologies available at the University.
  • Dr. Sandra Pesavento, Faculty in the Education Department will share how she incorporates the technology into her pedagogy.
  • The presentation will conclude with a demonstration of an interactive display from Qomo, which will be delivered by Joe Jackson from our audio visual vendor JP Lilley. A representative from Mersive Technologies will be on hand to demonstrate Solstice, a wireless display technology that fosters engagement, collaboration and productivity.

Lunch will be served.

The MISO Survey Launches on February 22

On February 22, many of you will be asked to participate in the MISO (Measuring Information Systems Outcomes) Survey. This survey provides a framework to assess the frequency of use, importance, satisfaction, and knowledge about library and technology services on a college campus on the part of students, faculty and staff members.

You will have the opportunity to provide feedback on applications, lab facilities, communication methods just to mention a few. Your assessment will provide the necessary input required to achieve excellence in library and computing services. Your feedback is very important to us. Please set aside some time to make a difference!

Update: Banner 9

Banner 9 Admin Pages went Live in production on Monday, January 22. Ellucian is continuing with enhancements, especially in the area of usability including a new compact page layout for improved navigation, printing improvements, page-specific enhancements, and search/filtering improvements. This sets the institution up for new Ellucian Self Service Banner products including the Student Advising Profile that is targeted to go live during the Spring semester. New and improved Registration Self Service Modules are also being looked at. More to come….

Computer Budget Forms for FY18/19

Budget forms for all academic and administrative computer requests for FY18/19 were emailed to department heads on February 6, 2018 and are due back to IT by Friday, March 2, 2018.  In light of limited budgetary resources this coming year, the evaluation and prioritization of these technology requests will focus on providing efficiencies in the administrative and academic areas.

As a reminder, each employee should have only one system.  If your current computer equipment does not meet your needs in performing your job, please make sure to contact your supervisor before the deadline.  IT staff members will be meeting with departments to assist in this process.

Business Process Improvement: CTLE Writing Center Scheduling, Recordkeeping and Reporting through WCONLINE Software Solution

The CTLE Writing Center, with strong support from the Division of Information Technology, is now using a third party software solution to manage the scheduling, recordkeeping and reporting needs of the Writing Center called WCONLINE.

WCONLINE provides easy, web-based scheduling, as well as a comprehensive and customized recordkeeping in a secure and convenient way. The software includes features such as reminders, no-show policy enforcement, text messages, waiting lists, scheduling restrictions and online interfaces.  Students can easily browse available times, specialties and courses before making an appointment. Staff from the Information Technology Development and Applications area created an integration with WCONLINE that retrieves a student’s courses and instructor names when they access the scheduling request form.

Writing Consultants can quickly review upcoming appointments, view student histories, check students in, and enter post-session reports.

Administrators have the ability to define what demographic, appointment, post-session, and survey data is collected, as well as to review sessions conducted through the included online consultation modules.

Each and every consultation is logged into the system, allowing for the collection and viewing of the data as customized, graphical reports in the system or exported as Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.

As a completely web-based product, no special software, hardware, or technical help desk support is needed to use the program. A subscription to WCONLINE includes support for an unlimited number of schedules, students, and staff. Support is always included, as are monthly updates, version upgrades, live backups, and customizations.

Do telemarketers keep calling you?

If a telemarketer keeps calling your University desk phone from the same number, you can place a request for this number to be blocked. All you need to do is send an email to techsupport@scranton.edu and indicate which number (area code and seven digit phone number) the telemarketer is calling you from. The Technology Support Center will open a ticket for this number to be blocked.

Welcome to Carl Hurst, Associate CIO

The Division of Information Technology welcomed Carl Hurst as Associate CIO last July. Carl has a wealth of knowledge and experience in leading IT operations and managing network and server infrastructure, network and data security, database systems, software deployment and virtual desktop systems. As Associate CIO, he develops and coordinates comprehensive technical and operational plans that work towards the strategic direction of the University and the Division of Information Technology. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Wilkes University in Pennsylvania.

Carl is currently working with IT technical staff on several projects including revising and strengthening our information security policies and procedures; researching and investigating identity and access management; participating on the Royal Drive replacement implementation team and looking into operational efficiencies with the IT division.
