The Social Justice in the Information Society Speaker Series will return next week and continue into the following week.

On Wednesday, April 8th at 6PM in Swartz Center (Conference Room B), Marywood University, Dr. Zeynep Tufekci will join us virtually to share her research on New Civic Spaces and make herself available for a question and answer session facilitated by a faculty member. Dr. Sarah Kenehan, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Marywood University, will serve as facilitator.

On Monday, April 13th at 7PM in the Moskovitz Theater (Denaples Center), Marvin Ammori will join us virtually to share his research on Net Neutrality and make himself available for a question and answer session facilitated by a faculty member.  Joseph Casabona, Adjunct Professor of Computing Sciences, The University of Scranton, will serve as facilitator.

These events are free and open to the public and a dessert reception will follow the presentations.

These events have been made possible through the Marywood University and University of Scranton Cooperative Grant.

The library will be hosting an open Game Night from 8-11PM in the Reilly Learning Commons! All students, staff, and faculty are welcome to join in the fun. There will be Just Dance on the Xbox Kinect, Rockband on the PS3, SuperSmash bros on the Wii, and MarioKart on the Wii!

Free Pizza, Soda, and Snacks will be provided!

The Center for Health and Education Wellness and the Weinberg Memorial Library are co-hosting a drop-in Meditation for Daily Life series in the Heritage Room during the month of February.

All students, staff, and faculty are invited to join in the program which will be held tonight (Thursday, February 26) from 5:00-5:30PM in the Heritage Room.

The library is seeking submissions for the 5th annual Environmental Art Show. The art show will be held from April 13th until the 20th.

The purpose of the Environmental Art Show is to promote the natural beauty of our environment and the ideal practice of sustainable living through artworks of all types, including painting, photography, repurposed goods, sculpture, and more. The show is comprised entirely of University of Scranton student, staff, and faculty submissions, so please consider contributing!

The deadline for submissions is set for Friday, April 10, 2015. All works of art can be dropped off at either the circulation or reference desks of the library. All artwork is returned after the exhibit has closed.

Marywood University and The University of Scranton are jointly hosting a speaker series that will delve into contemporary issues that surround our internet society. Social Justice in the Information Society is a four part speaker series that will give faculty, staff, students, and community members the benefit of participating in a forum with a highly respected scholar doing critical work in the interdisciplinary field of information science.

The speakers will videoconference into the forum and a local scholar will facilitate the event. Following the presentation, the guest lecturer and facilitator will participate in a Q & A period so the audience can interact with the material and the lecturer. These events will be free and open to the public and a dessert reception will follow. Please consider joining us for both sessions.

Dr. Johannes Britz, Provost & Vice Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will discuss the implications of, and raise awareness to, the social, political, economic, technological, and ethical issues surrounding access to information.

This event will be facilitated by Dr. Aaron Simmons, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Marywood University

 

 

Privacy, Security, and Government Surveillance
Wikileaks, Big Data and the “New Accountability”

Dr. Adam D. Moore, Associate Professor of the Information School & Philosophy Department at the University of Washington argues that accessing and sharing sensitive information is morally suspect and that we simply do not owe each other the level of information access promised by “big data” or Wikileaks. The “Just Trust Us,’ “Nothing to Hide,” and “Consent” arguments will be presented and critiqued.

This event will be facilitated by Dr. Michael Jenkins, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, University of Scranton.

The last two speakers in the series will be scheduled in the spring semester.
