Job Opportunity: Evening Circulation Services Clerk

We invite applications for the full-time Evening Circulation Services Clerk.

The Evening Circulation Services Clerk works under the supervision of the Circulation Services Coordinator to perform the duties listed below.

Essential Duties:

  • Provides patron assistance at the Circulation Desk. This includes:
    • Conducting circulation transactions (charging, discharging, reviewing, recalling, placing holds, and collecting fines and fees).
    • Registering new patrons.
    • Assisting with maintaining equipment (i.e. photocopiers, laptop computers, IPads, security gates), replenishing supplies, and reporting equipment malfunctions.
    • Answering telephone calls and assisting with circulation questions. Referring reference questions to Research and Scholarly Services.
    • Assisting with the sending of faxes.
    • Responding to and documenting violations of theft and damage to Library materials.
    • Processing monetary transactions.
    • Assisting patrons with use of the public catalog for finding material, especially reserves.
  • Maintains good order in the Library stacks. This includes:
    • Supervising work study students’ re-shelving of materials, and re-shelving materials in the absence of student assistants.
    • Overseeing the condition of materials on the shelves, including the pulling of books for mending.
    • Supervising small shifts of the collection to ease crowding. Participation in the planning and execution of larger collection shifts as needed, including any related furniture layout/repositioning.
    • Maintaining the New Book Shelves.
  • Assists with the supervision of student employees, including training and assigning work. Communicates with students about departmental issues in person and via the Circulation Services Blog. Monitors student attendance.
  • Closes the library building by unlocking/locking specific doors and gates and adjusting elevator settings.
  • Participates in the maintenance of basement storage, which includes materials from the collection and Friends of the Library Book Sale Materials. This includes:
    • Serving as a point person for book donors, including collecting information for acknowledgment letters and coordinating the pick-up of gift books if needed.
    • Selecting materials for the Friends Book Sale shelves.
    • Trainings/Supervising students who search the Library catalog to determine if gift books are candidates for addition to the collection.
    • Assisting in the set up and take down of the annual Friends Book Sale.

Additional Responsibilities:

  1. Oversees and is responsible for Library services and building operations during evening hours when Research and Scholarly Services Librarians are not present.
  2. Selects materials and produces posters for special displays.
  3. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred Education:

Bachelor’s degree

Minimum Job Experience Requirements:

Minimum of 4 months library work experience; including familiarity with an automated library circulation system, on-line catalog searching, Internet searching, and use of Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with/supervising college age students.

Additional Skills Required:

  1. Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of users – students, faculty, administration, and public patrons, and to handle communications with tact, courtesy and discretion.
  2. Ability to instruct/direct student work.
  3. Excellent organizational/record-keeping skills.
  4. Must be able to lift and move heavy cartons of books, weighing up to 40 lbs.
  5. Must be able to respect, support and contribute to the University’s Catholic and Jesuit mission.

Schedule/Work Hours: Sun-Thurs 3:30 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. (35 hours per week), with some fluctuations in the summer and at exam times.

Bike Scranton 2019 Ends Today

The 2019 Bike Scranton Season has ended today. Preliminary reports indicate a substantial increase in borrowing this year. We are happy to be participants in this green initiative. Plan to join us again next April!

Library Seeks Raffle Donations for the 2020 Ann Moskovitz Leaves of Class Fundraiser

The Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library at the University of Scranton are now collecting donations for the 2020 Ann Moskovitz Leaves of Class Raffle. This fundraising drive benefits the Friends of the Library Endowment Fund. The Endowment created with these funds guarantees a source of funding for Library collections enjoyed by everyone.

Donations can include gift certificates or gift cards to restaurants, salons, shops and museums; gift baskets; tickets to events and concerts; or membership to area fitness centers and yoga studios.

We award these prizes in 2020, so we would appreciate that you not include an expiration date. We are accepting donations until September 9, 2019.

Bike Scranton 2019

Bike Scranton is back! For the 2019 season the library has 10 bikes (our most yet!) of different sizes to lend to anyone age 18 or over. Bikes may be borrowed whenever the library is open, and all bikes must be returned before the library closes that same day. There is no charge for borrowing bikes. Helmets are included as well! Stop by the Library Circulation Desk and borrow a bike today!

Updated Video and Audio Recording Rooms

The Reilly Learning Commons’ Lecture Capture room was recently renovated to create two rooms. One for audio recording and the other for video recording.

124i is now an Audio Recording room with an iMac that includes Audacity, Adobe Audition, and Garage Band to create podcasts or other audio projects. We have a Yeti USB Microphone available at the circulation desk for students, faculty, and staff to check out for 3 hours at a time. You can read more about podcasting and audio recording on our research guide. You can reserve the Audio Recording room by selecting 124i in the room reservation system. 

124j is now a Video Recording room with a One Button Studio. The One Button Studio is a streamlined space for recording videos at the touch of a button. To use the system, you simply plug in a USB flash drive, and the camera and microphone turn on. When you are ready to begin recording, press the space bar (the button), and a countdown timer will display on the monitor. When you are finished recording, press the button again. Job Opportunity: Cataloging and Metadata Librarian, Weinberg Memorial Library at The University of Scranton

We invite applications for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track Cataloging and Metadata Librarian. The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian facilitates access to Library resources by supervising the Library’s Cataloging Department and maintaining the accuracy of the Library’s online catalog.

Essential Duties:

– Directs and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Cataloging Department

– Supervises and evaluates the work of one Cataloging Assistant

– Catalogs materials in all subjects, formats and languages

– Maintains the accuracy of the catalog’s records

– Manages authority control and the bulk loading of bibliographic records into the library catalog

– Provides cataloging statistics for library reports and accreditation reports for various University departments

– Consults with Special Collections and Digital Services as needed

– Explores and integrates appropriate emerging technologies into cataloging practices

– Maintains close relationships with all library functions (circulation, research services, acquisitions, special collections and systems)

– Participates in planning, implementing, and configuration of the integrated library system (ILS) as it pertains to cataloging functions and public display

– Participates in information literacy instruction

Additional Skills Required:

-Familiarity with cataloging tools and standards including: RDA, AACR2, LCSH, LCCN, and MARC21 format for bibliographic holdings and authority control

– Ability to implement new cataloging standards and procedures

– Knowledge of XML and linked data technologies (e.g., XSLT, RDF, OWL, SPARQL, BIBFRAME)

– Familiarity with emerging trends in library systems and services.

– Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and presentation skills

– Strong analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills

– Ability to work effectively both as a team member and independently

Must possess an American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master’s degree at time of appointment.   Two years of cataloging experience (including non-book cataloging) working in a library, archives, or museum.  Experience with an integrated library system (ILS) preferably Innovative Interfaces, Inc.’s Sierra. Working knowledge of OCLC Connexion or Worldshare Management Services.  Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate, and implement projects. Supervisory experience.

Technical Services Clerk, Weinberg Memorial Library at The University of Scranton

The Technical Services Clerk is responsible for assisting in the management and access to the Library’s electronic and print resources through a variety of technical procedures including: elementary cataloging, performing basic library acquisitions processes, recording and processing library materials in all formats, and assisting in file and records maintenance. This position also provides backup for the Library’s mail services. The work schedule for this position will be Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additional hours may be required.

Education and Job Experience Requirements:

Associate’s degree, or two years completed towards a Bachelor’s degree is required. One (1) year library work experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree preferred. Library work experience in Technical Services, with use of an integrated library system is preferred.
