New Associate Director for the Center & Teaching Learning Excellence (CTLE) Begins on Nov. 15.

I am very pleased to announce that the search for CTLE Associate Director – Instructional Curriculum Designer has ended with the successful selection of Mr. Brian Snapp. Brian has been at Lehigh Carbon Community College since 2007 as instructional technologist. In that position, Brian has collaborated with faculty to design and develop new and updated online courses. He also has provided individualized instruction and mentoring of faculty for the pedagogically-driven integration of technology into teaching. Brian holds an M.S. in Instructional Technology from Bloomsburg University and a B.S. in Telecommunications/Networking form Rochester Institute of Technology. Brian will start on November 15, 2011. Please join me in welcoming him to campus.

New Assistant Dean of the Library Joins us on Jan. 2nd.

I am very pleased to announce that the search for Assistant Dean has concluded with the successful recruitment of Jean Lenville.  Jean has been at Harvard College Library since 2001, most recently working on a special project to combine JSTOR holdings from the 12 Harvard Libraries for a single copy retention.  At Harvard, she also served as Head of Acquisitions for E-Resources, Serials and Government Documents and as Head of Serials Services.  Prior to working at Harvard, Jean held positions of progressive responsibility at the University of Richmond in Virginia–from Serials Librarian to acting head of Technical Services to Head of Bibliographic Access.  She holds and MLS form Simmons College and a B.S. in Speech from Emerson College.   Please join the Library staff in welcoming Jean to campus.

 

Information Literacy Stipends for 2010-2011

Call to University Faculty:

Do you want to enhance your students’ research skills? Then an Information Literacy Stipend may be just what you need!

This is an opportunity for you to strengthen students’ research skills in your discipline.

If you are awarded one of the five (5) stipends available for 2010-2011, you will collaborate with a faculty librarian to develop assignments that focus on information literacy skills, and you will also receive a $1,000.00 stipend.

What is information literacy? Why is it important?

Information Literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to “recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.” The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) has developed competency standards as a guide to help faculty integrate information literacy into their courses.

To apply…Submit a proposal, not to exceed 2 pages, that includes the following:

  • Course name and number
  • Student learning outcomes related to Information Literacy Standards

  • Assessment plan to determine how student learning outcomes will be evaluated
  • Projected Timeline (Spring/Fall 2011 or Spring 2012)
  • Name of the Library Faculty member with whom you will collaborate

Proposals will be reviewed by the Library Advisory Committee’s Information Literacy Subcommittee. Stipends are subject to taxes. Upon completion of the course, you must submit a report documenting the impact that the information literacy component had on student learning outcomes to the Dean of the Library and Information Fluency. This report will be posted on the Library’s Web site.

If you are interested, we can schedule an information session as well as connect you with someone who has completed a successful grant. Faculty Scholarship Exhibit in Library’s Heritage Room

During the month of May, the Weinberg Memorial Library is hosting its annual Faculty Scholarship Exhibit through Thursday May 27 in the Library’s Heritage Room. The exhibit features books, articles, and conference presentation announcements produced by University of Scranton faculty members since 2008. The exhibit, organized by academic department, provides an overview of the diversity and quality of scholarly accomplishments by the University’s faculty. William Bernhardt to Receive Distinguished Author Award on Saturday, Nov 14th.

The talents and skills of the 2009 Recipient of the Royden B. Davis Distinguished Author Award, William Bernhardt, reflect many aspects of the contemporary library.  William Bernhardt is an author, a teacher, a mentor, a researcher, a composer, and communicator.

As an author, Mr. Bernhardt had sold more than 10 million books in various countries.  Library Journal has called him the “master of the courtroom drama.”  The Vancouver Sun dubbed him “the American equivalent of P.G. Wodehouse and John Mortimer.” He introduced the Ben Kincaid series in 1991 with Primary Justice and published the 17th in the series, Capitol Offense, in 2009. The Susan Pulaski series has two titles, Dark Eye and Strip Search.  Among his other novels is the collection Legal Briefs which also contains stories by previous Distinguished Authors Philip Margolin and Lisa Scottoline.   Royalties from the sale of this book benefited the Children’s Defense Fund.  Contributors to the anthology Natural Suspect donated author royalties to the Nature Conservancy. His works for children include a biography of civil rights leader Ada Lois Sipuel, who broke the color barrier for higher education in Oklahoma and throughout the south.

In his recent book, Nemesis: The Final Case of Eliot Ness, Bernhardt solved the mystery of America’s first serial killer, the so-called Mad Butcher of Cleveland, whose identity has eluded investigators for decades. In the most recent book in the Ben Kincaid series, Capitol Conspiracy, Bernhardt keeps the series fresh and contemporary with a story that takes attorney Ben Kincaid to Washington, D.C., for a high-profile case involving controversial anti-terrorist legislation, political skullduggery, and murder.  In 1999, he founded HAWK Publishing Group.  Each summer HAWK sponsors Writing Workshops to “nurture and mentor aspiring writers.”  These efforts facilitate publication by new authors. In addition to mentoring new writers, HAWK has published books by acclaimed authors such as Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist N. Scott Momaday, Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Janis Ian, and PBS newsman Jim Lehrer.  His new book, Capitol Offense” is due out on Sept. 29th.

Among the awards Bernhardt has received are the Oklahoma Book Award for Best Fiction in 1995 for Perfect Justice and in 1999 for Dark Justice; the Southern Writers Guild’s Gold Medal Award in 1998; a Career Achievement Award at the 2000 Booklovers Convention in Houston; and in 2000 the  H. Louise Cobb Distinguished Author Award, “in recognition of an outstanding body of work that has profoundly influenced the way in which we understand ourselves and American society at large.”  (Contemporary Authors)  In addition to his law degree, Bernhardt also holds a Masters Degree in English.  His specialty field is Victorian literature.

Pro Deo Room Computers

Thanks to the students and faculty who have gave us feedback in the LibQual Survey. During Spring break, the Information Resources staff and Library Systems staff worked to improve computer performance in the Pro Deo Room. Staff worked on each computer work station and upgraded the network hubs on the 1st and 3rd floors to switches in order to improve network performance on those floors. We welcome your input. Please report any computer problems to the Circulation Desk on the Library’s 1st Floor.
