Due to inclement weather, Library services will be ending at 6:00 p.m. tonight (9/1/2021). The Library’s 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors will remain open 24/7 for student use.

Please Use the Library’s Front Entrance Today (9/1/2021)

Sandbag barriers will be placed in the Library’s Courtyard in an effort to reduce possible flooding in the building. The Reilly Learning Commons and rear door entrances will be closed.

The Library remains open, and the University Community should use the front entrance of the building across from the McDade Center for Literary and Performing Arts.

You can consult a University of Scranton Librarian during our service hours by calling 570-941-4000 or by using the Ask a Librarian chat box. Assistance is available 24/7 through the chat box, which is covered by librarians not affiliated with the University of Scranton outside service hours.

Research consultations can be scheduled by using the Ask a Librarian chat box or by contacting your library liaison directly by email.

To find resources, such as books, periodicals, and media, search our catalog from the Library’s home page. The Library’s large collection of e-books, e-journals, and streaming media are available 24/7. To access the Library’s online content, you must first authenticate through my.scranton.edu.

The InterLibrary Loan (ILL) service is available for requesting articles not currently accessible at our library. For ILL questions/concerns, please email interlibrary-loan@scranton.edu.

The Weinberg Memorial Library has five floors and offers a variety of spaces to support your study and research needs including computer workstations, individual study space, group study rooms, quiet study areas, and the Heritage Room.

The library’s Pro Deo room, Reilly Learning Commons, 2nd floor, and 3rd floor remain accessible to students 24 hours a day when campus is open and include printing stations, group study rooms, and lab computers.

Circulation Services, located on the first floor, can help you check out and return print materials, laptops, and iPads. You can also pick up items on reserve, books placed on hold, and InterLibrary loan materials.

The Reilly Learning Commons (RLC), located on the first floor, is a collaborative space with access to high-powered computers, video and audio recording rooms, 3D Printing, and reservable group study rooms equipped with white boards and monitors.

The Library’s Research & Scholarly Services department, located on the second floor, can assist you with research, such as finding, evaluating, and citing information.

The Media Resources Collection (MRC), located on the third floor, provides media materials for instructional support and student learning. The EdLab collection, found within the Media Resources Collection, consists of children’s literature and K-12 textbooks.

University of Scranton Archives and Helen Gallagher McHugh Special Collections, located on the fourth floor, collects, preserves and provides access to rare materials of historical value on local and University history. Appointments are strongly recommended.

The Digital Services Department provides access to digital content related to University Archives and Special Collections. You can search our digital collections online at http://digitalservices.scranton.edu/.

Printing at the Library Upgrade

With the help of IT, the Library upgraded its printing services over the summer. Below are the instructions to follow for printing from any device on-campus. You can also visit this guide for instructions for off-campus and additional support for printing, photo-copying, and faxing.

You can print from any device on-campus using the following steps:

  1. Open a browser and type in the address: pharos.scranton.edu 
  1. For the Username and Password, type in your Royal ID number and password.
  1. When the Print Center main page opens, click on “Upload” to select the file(s) you want to print.
  1. Locate the file to print on your device, select it, then click on “Open”. You can upload multiple files.
  1. When the Print Center displays your job in the print queue, click on the job(s) you want to print. At the bottom of the screen, select your options for printing (color, double or single sided, page range, pages per slide, number of copies). The cost of the print will be listed on the right of the selected print job.
  2. Select where you want the job to print by choosing a printer from the drop-down listing “Select a printer” and then click “Print.”
  3. A confirmation dialog box will appear with the cost and location of the printer you selected. You can go back to make changes or click on “Confirm” to print. Your print job is sent immediately to the printer you selected, and a confirmation notice will appear.
  4. Go to the selected printer and pick up your job.

Library not accepting donations

The library experienced extensive flooding earlier this week, partially in the area where book sale items are stored. Staff must focus on mitigation efforts right now, so we are not able to accept any book sale donations at this time. We will alert the campus community when this changes. Thank you for your continued support and  understanding.

In Memory of Brian E. McHugh ’59 (January 1, 1937 – August 9, 2021)

It is with immense sadness that we announce the loss of Brian E. McHugh ’59, dear friend to the Weinberg Memorial Library, The University of Scranton, and the wider community.   

Born in Kingston and a graduate of Kingston High School, Brian would serve in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After being honorably discharged, Brian studied at the University of Havana, Cuba and earned a B.S. in Psychology from The University of Scranton in 1959.   

With an entrepreneurial career spanning instruction, banking, and construction, Brian was most recently a field consultant for business development. He was also a member of the Advisory Board of The Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library and active in both the Luzerne County and Kingston Historical Societies. His generous estate gift to the library, in memory of his mother, resulted in the naming of the Helen Gallagher McHugh Special Collections.  

He will be greatly missed.

PALCI E-Z Borrow moves to the ReShare platform August 12th

The PALCI E-Z Borrow system will migrate their backend software from Relais to ReShare on August 12th. The software will bring more options and flexibility to the processing staff-side of the system. The landing and search pages will have new clean look while providing the same services to patrons. Announcing the Search for the next Dean of the Weinberg Memorial Library

The Opportunity

The University of Scranton, a Catholic and Jesuit University offering a transformational learning experience, seeks Dean of the Weinberg Memorial Library. The Dean of the Library provides leadership and strategic direction for all aspects of library services to the University, contributing to the Library’s campus-wide focus on transformative teaching and learning in the Ignatian tradition. The Dean oversees the Weinberg Memorial Library (WML), and plays a creative role in fostering a climate conducive to supporting the teaching, learning, and scholarship of students, faculty, and staff. The Dean reports to the Provost and serves as a member of the Deans’ Leadership Council, Provost’s Advisory Council, Provost’s Committee on Academic Policy and Compliance, Faculty Personnel Committee, and Faculty Handbook Committee. The Dean of the Library also has supervisory responsibility for all faculty and staff in the Weinberg Memorial Library.

The Responsibilities of the Dean of the Weinberg Memorial Library

Essential Duties Include:

  • Administers all units of the Weinberg Memorial Library.
  • Serves as chief advocate and spokesperson for the academic support provided by the Library.
  • Leads the design, implementation, marketing, and assessment of Library policies, services and programs.
  • Collaborates and regularly consults with faculty and staff to develop library collections, programs, and services.
  • Has primary responsibility for strategic planning, annual report submission, accreditation and program review, supervision and mentorship of the Library faculty and staff, and professional development.
  • Makes appointment, reappointment, and rank and tenure recommendations on matters of faculty status for the Library faculty.
  • Manages the financial activities of the Library including the development and monitoring of the annual operating budgets and the strategic and effective allocation of resources.
  • Distributes various Library development funds, grants, prizes, etc.
  • Oversees the ongoing maintenance and assessment of the University-wide Information Literacy program.
  • Coordinates the Library’s information technology planning with the University’s Chief Information Officer.
  • Coordinates timely Library communications with the University community.
  • Leads fundraising for the Library, including supporting the Friends of the Library organization and serving as the Library’s liaison to University Advancement.
  • Coordinates the annual Jay Nathan, Ph.D., Visiting Scholar Lecture Series with University Advancement, as well as any additional educational events sponsored by the Library.
  • Serves on University committees and as an ex-officio member of the Library Advisory Committee. Receives advice and counsel as appropriate.
  • Participates in professional organizations and networks with national groups and individuals in the fields of libraries and faculty and student enrichment. Represents the University at the annual AJCU Library Deans Conference.

Position Qualifications 

Minimum Education Requirements:

American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master’s degree and a second Master’s or Doctoral degree required.

Minimum Job Experience Requirements:

Minimum of eight years of progressively responsible and administrative/leadership experience in an academic library.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working in a collective bargaining/unionized faculty environment.
