The Mission Reflection Collection has been relocated to a new space on the 4th Floor.
You can find the Mission Reflection Room adjacent to the rear elevator doors in Room 423. The Mission Reflection collection contains print materials on topics of Catholic higher education and Jesuit history. The collection also includes volumes of the series Corpus Christianorum and Sources chrétiennes.
The Weinberg Memorial Library is seeking submissions for our annual exhibit of Environmental Art.
The art show will be held in the Heritage Room of the Weinberg Memorial Library April 19-26, 2022.
Environmental Art promotes the natural beauty of our environment and the ideal practice of sustainable living through artworks of all types, including painting, photography, repurposed goods, sculpture, video and more.
Everything is Connected: Celebrating our Connection with the Natural Environment is the theme for 2022. We encourage artists to consider developing artwork around this year’s theme. Submissions are open to all and we encourage submissions by University of Scranton students, staff, faculty, and alumni.
The deadline for submissions is set for Wednesday, March 30th, 2022. All physical works of art can be dropped off at the Circulation desk on the 1st floor of the library. All artwork is returned after the art show ends.
This year, in addition to the physical exhibit, we will be offering the option to also exhibit virtually. The virtual exhibit will debut during Earth Week on April 19, 2022. If you are submitting digital artwork, you can submit your artwork at the following link:

The deadline to apply for an Affordable Learning Implementation Grant for Spring 2022 has been extended to December 3rd, 2021.
Affordable Learning aims to reduce the financial burden on students by replacing expensive for-cost textbooks and course materials with no-cost or low-cost educational resources. OER stands for Open Educational Resources, which include online textbooks, media, and other materials that are available freely for use and can be remixed/reused for educational purposes. For our Affordable Learning Implementation Grants, formerly OER Implementation Grants, faculty may opt to use existing OER textbooks and open source software that is available online or may compile course materials from appropriately licensed e-books and journals that are open access or available through the Library to replace all, or some, of their for-cost course materials. The Library invites University of Scranton Faculty to join us during Open Access Week on Wednesday, October 27th, at 11:00 am on Zoom to discuss implementing Open Educational Resources (OER) and affordable learning materials in the classroom.
Discussion will include an introduction to OER, how to locate OER and other open materials within the Library’s collection and online, and suggestions for how you can replace costly textbooks and other resources with OER and/or appropriately licensed library resources. We will also discuss a new trial database, CloudSource OA, and workshop with attendees to utilize this resource that curates and aggregates open access publications and open educational resources from leading academic publishers and universities.
Librarians will also answer questions about OER and the Affordable Learning Implementation Grants (formerly the Open Educational Resources Grants), available to full-time Faculty and accepting applications until November 19th.

Want to see what is new but can’t make it to the Library?
There is a quick and easy way to search the Catalog to see the new books we have received within the last month.
In the catalog search box, type “New Books” in quotes.
Then use the facets along the left-hand side to refine your results by “Subject” and “Book”.
Faceting will allow you to see a list of everything that the Library has recently added to our print collection.
If you want to see what new books have come in for a specific subject or keyword, you can use the Advanced Search.

Position title
Acquisitions Clerk
Job Purpose
The Acquisitions Clerk is responsible for all aspects of ordering and receiving materials for the library. This position also cross-trains on other Technical Services activities/duties.
Essential Duties
– Processes order requests, searches the online catalog and databases for materials already held and researches current prices and information for requested editions
– Receives materials and reconciles shipments with packing lists, monitoring items for damage, or publishing errors. Reports problems to the Collections and Resource Management Librarian
– Researches, prepares, and places library book orders for all formats, including eBooks, print, out-of-print, and “rush” orders using the Library’s integrated online system, online databases, and Internet resources
– Processes and inputs invoices into Sierra (library computer system) for payment
– Uses departmental credit card to purchase book and standing orders as necessary
– Monitors book & standing orders and vendor shipments to ensure accurate receipt of orders
– Prepares & reviews open order reports and statuses of orders and standing orders
– Monitors departmental budget balances to ensure funds are not overspent
– Prepares credit card transaction reports for submission to Purchasing Department
– Follows up on vendor errors, damaged materials, and returns
– Answers the telephone in Acquisitions Dept. and provides information or refers to proper personnel
– Monitors the departmental operations in the absence of the Collections and Resource Management Librarian
– Files invoices and order records
Additional Required Skills
– Ability to perform methodical and detailed work tasks with a high level of accuracy and close attention to detail
– Ability to work independently and to prioritize tasks according to the needs of the department
– Ability to think critically and problem solve
– Ability to multi-task
– Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
– Excellent interpersonal skills and a willingness to work collaboratively
– Ability to lift heavy cartons of books (up to 40 lbs.), and push heavy book trucks throughout the library
– Technical competency in Microsoft Office products
– Must be able to respect, support, and contribute to the University’s Catholic and Jesuit mission
Minimum Education Requirements
Associate’s degree, or two years completed towards a Bachelor’s degree. Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
Minimum Job Experience Requirements
One year library work experience is required
Preferred Qualifications
Library work experience in Technical Services, with use of an integrated library system. Working knowledge of OCLC and MARC records.
Schedule/Work Hours
Mon-Fri 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (35 hours per week)

Did you know you can browse our library shelves remotely? You can access our catalog’s virtual shelf browse feature by simply clicking on the call number of a book in the catalog.
Accessing the Virtual Shelf Browse
Log into your my.scranton account and chose ‘Library’ from the menu on the left. From the Library page you can perform a keyword search in the Catalog Search box.
Choose a record you are interested in from the results page. Double click on that record to see the expanded view of the record. Within the expanded view of the record, click on the call number to access the virtual shelf browse.
A ‘nearby item browse’ pop-up window will appear with titles from the same call number range. Within the ‘nearby item browse’ window, click the arrows on the left or right to view titles on either side of the title you started with. The graphical browse shows you book covers of adjacent books and their associated call numbers. Clicking on a book cover or title within the pop-up window will take you to the record for that title.
There is also a list browse option if you would like to just view the titles as a list in call number order. Clicking on previous and next will move the list up or down. Clicking on the title will take you to that title’s record.
Placing a hold for pickup
If you located a title you would like to borrow from the Print Circulating Collection or from Media, you can ‘place a hold’ on the item(s) you would like to borrow from our catalog. Items that can be placed on hold have a ‘place a hold’ button on the right-hand side of the catalog entry.
After clicking the button, you may be asked to log in using your R# and authenticate if you are not already logged in. A pop-up box confirming that you would like to place a hold will appear. Click ‘submit’ and circulation will be notified that you have placed a hold.
If your request is successful you will see a confirmation window, click ‘OK’ and your transaction is complete. Your item(s) will then be selected, packaged and labeled with your name by our circulation staff and made available for you to pickup from the bookcase in the Library’s lobby on the Monroe St. side of the building. You will be notified by email when your item(s) are available for pickup. You may pick up your items during the hours listed in our Fall 2020 Library Services Hours Lib Guide.
