You may know that April is National Poetry Month, but did you know that Thursday April 27 is “Poem in Your Pocket” Day? The Academy of American Poets encourages poetry lovers to celebrate by selecting a poem and sharing it with others throughout the day at schools, bookstores, libraries, parks, workplaces, and on social media using the hashtag #PocketPoem.

I am choosing to share here the poem “Sometimes” by Rae Crossman, which illustrates why I love poetry.

Rushing into our early morning bedroom

under-the-pillow discovery.

 

My daughter’s

toothless grin.

 

Sometimes poetry is like that:

all tooth fairy

no incisors.

it’s wolf canines

and snap of bone.

Join us at the Weinberg Memorial Library’s book sale this weekend! The University of Scranton’s Weinberg Memorial Library will hold its annual book sale on Saturday, April 29th from 9:00AM to 8:00PM and Sunday, April 30th from 12:00PM to 4:00PM. A special preview sale will be held on Friday, April 28th for current University of Scranton students and current (2022-2023) Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library members and Schemel Forum members. Interested in becoming a member of the Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library? Information for membership can be found at Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library. The Bonnie W. Oldham Library Research Prize

There is one week left to apply for the Bonnie W. Oldham Library Research Prize! Project submissions for Intersession and Spring 2023 are due Monday, May 1, 2023 by 4:00 pm.

The Bonnie W. Oldham Library Research Prize recognizes excellence in research projects that show evidence of significant knowledge in the methods of research and the information gathering process and use of library resources, tools, and services.

New this year: The selection criteria have been updated and refreshed in 2022-2023 to better recognize the diversity of projects on campus. Visit the Selection Criteria and Judging information on the prize website to learn more.  

Three prizes of $500.00 each will be awarded to the winning individual student or group in the following categories: Undergraduate Foundational (100-level courses), Undergraduate Upper-level (200- to 400-level courses), and Graduate. If won by a group, the award will be split equally among the group members. All you need to do is write a 500- to 700-word essay describing your research process and how you used the Library in completing the project. Check out our Tips web page for updated advice on how to craft the best 500- to 700-word essay you can about your research. 

A statement of faculty support from the instructor who assigned the research project is also required for each submission.

Bike Scranton is back with a new name – Bike Lackawanna! For the 2023 season the library has 6 bikes of different sizes to lend to anyone age 18 or over. Bikes may be borrowed whenever the library is open, and all bikes must be returned before the library closes that same day. There is no charge for borrowing bikes. Stop by the Library Services Desk and borrow a bike soon!

Assistant Professor and Digital Services Librarian, Colleen Farry, was honored at last evenings Faculty Appreciation Celebration. Prof. Farry received the Provost Faculty Enhancement Interdisciplinary Award which honors a faculty member who has demonstrated noteworthy academic leadership in promoting and strengthening cross-disciplinary or interdepartmental teaching and learning. Her nominator writes, “[Prof. Farry] empowers students to develop their own digital exhibits, and to this end, she has worked collaboratively with students on Honors projects, Slattery Fellowships, and Presidential fellowships.” The nominator goes on to say how Prof. Farry works with various departments, faculty, and students across campus.

Please join me in congratulating Prof. Farry on this most deserved achievement!

The 2023 Environmental Art Show:  Welcome to my World is now open!

Environmental Art promotes the natural beauty of our environment and the ideal practice of sustainable living through artworks of all types, including painting, photography, repurposed goods, sculpture, and more.

On Friday April 14th, in conjunction with the opening of the Environmental Art Show, Artist Stéphanie Williams, a designer, beekeeper, and educator, will be leading an interactive presentation at 4:30 pm in the Charles Kratz Scranton Heritage Room. 

 

Stéphanie works in mixed mediums, incorporating nature, people, creatures, environments, sounds, and energies that we share into her art. She will discuss the relationship of bees to her art, her experiences as a beekeeper, and will address some of the environmental challenges facing bees and the American beekeeping community today. There will also be an opportunity to participate in a public art piece at the event.

Can’t make the 4:30pm event but still want to participate in the public art piece – Stéphanie will be out in front of the Library today, April 14th, between 10-11am and 12-1pm. We invite you to join us, meet Stéphanie and help to contribute to Stéphanie’s work.

We’ll be hosting a trail clean up for Earth Week at the Lackawanna Heritage Trail at the Broadway St. Trailhead, next to the Quinn Athletic Fields. The cleanup will take place on Sunday, April 23 at 10am. We will pick up garbage, paint information kiosks, possibly plant trees and remove invasive weeds. Supplies will be provided by the Lackawanna Heritage Valley.

Upcycle Plastic Bag Mat-Making Workshop for Earth Week

Join us in celebrating Earth Week by upcycling plastic shopping bags into useful sleeping mats! We’ll be hosting a workshop with retired community library director, Leah Rudolph, who will teach us how to create sleeping mats for unhoused individuals. We will cut plastic bags into strips, create plastic yarn known as “plarn,” and crochet the plarn into mats. Any completed mats will be donated to Keystone Mission. No former knowledge of crocheting is necessary to attend. You can drop in for a portion of the workshop or stay the whole time.

The workshop is Friday, April 21 2pm-5pm, in room 202 of the Library.
