Inaugural Lecture in Annual Series Sheds Light on Kazakhstan

BlogImage_NathanLectureThe University of Scranton has established The Jay Nathan, Ph.D. Visiting Scholar Lecture Series at the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Memorial Library.  The inaugural lecture in this series, titled “Kazakhstan & Central Asia: History, Culture, Politics & Economy,” occurred on Wednesday, April 2, at 5:30 p.m. The panel discussion, which was free of charge and open to the public, took place in the Scranton Heritage Room of the Weinberg Memorial Library.

The mission of the lecture series is to invite international scholars and professionals from economically challenged or politically suppressed nations to address issues that will enrich the intellectual life of the University community and the residents of our region.

The oil-rich nation of Kazakhstan, located in the heart of Asia, occupies more area than Western Europe. Since declaring its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, this ethnically and culturally diverse nation has pursued a balanced foreign policy and grown economically.

The inaugural lecture featured the series namesake, Jay Nathan, Ph.D., Professor of Management at St. John’s University, Queens, N.Y. Dr. Nathan was a Fulbright Scholar to Kazakhstan and a visiting professor and Ph.D. advisor to the Eurasian National University in Astana, the nation’s capital. He is an honorable professor of the Karaganda University of Economics, also in Kazakhstan. Previously, Dr. Nathan was a professor at the Kania School of Management at The University of Scranton. A lifetime member of the Fulbright Association, he serves on the board of the Philadelphia/Delaware Valley Chapter. Passionate about international business development in poor and emerging countries, Dr. Nathan is the author of “Kazakhstan’s New Economy: Post-Soviet, Central Asian Industries in a Global Era.”

Joining Dr. Nathan on the panel for “Kazakhstan & Central Asia: History, Culture, Politics & Economy” was Kairat Umarov, Kazakhstan’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the U.S.; William Courtney, senior principal for policy strategy at Computer Sciences Corporation; and Nancy Neill, facilitator of management discussions of vision, values and strategy and founder of the Atlanta Communications Group.

His Excellency Umarov graduated with honors from Almaty Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages with fluency in Kazakh, Russian, English and French. He has served as the deputy foreign minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan and as deputy director of the European States Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2004 to 2009. He concurrently held positions as Kazakhstan’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to both India and Sri Lanka.

William Courtney, a retired Foreign Service officer with the U.S. Dept. of State, advised on the reorganization of foreign affairs agencies; served as special assistant to the President for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia; and was U.S. Ambassador to Georgia and Kazakhstan. He has served as U.S. Commissioner with rank of Ambassador in negotiations with Russia to implement the Threshold Test Ban Treaty, U.S. deputy negotiator in U.S.-Soviet Defense and Space talks in Geneva, deputy executive secretary of the National Security Council staff, and special assistant to the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs.

Nancy Neill has appeared as a guest lecturer in communication for Emory University’s Goizueta Business School and for Georgia State University. She has served several nonprofit organizations including CARE, the Carter Center and the New York Blood Center. An award-winning short story writer, Neill is the co-author of the book “Real Collaboration: What it Takes for Global Health to Succeed,” and the author of “More than Bricks and Mortar.” She currently serves on the board of the Fulbright Association and is past president of the Georgia Chapter.

Friends of the Library 20th Anniversary Exhibit

Friends of the Library 20th AnniversaryCongratulations to the Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library, who mark their twentieth anniversary in 2014!  For two decades the Friends group has been committed to helping the Library excel in meeting the dynamic scholarly, cultural, and social endeavors of the University and the community at large.

In celebration of the anniversary, a small exhibit is on display in the 5th floor Heritage Room showcasing the years of support from the Friends group, including their various activities, events, and Endowment.  The exhibit will be on display until Thursday, April 17th.

Environmental Art Show – Call for Art!

The library is currently seeking submissions for the 4th annual Environmental Art Show that will be held from April 14th until 3:30PM on the 24th. There will be a reception held on Wednesday April 23rd—more details to follow in the coming months.

The purpose of the Environmental Art Show is to promote the natural beauty of our environment and the concept of sustainability through artworks of all types, including painting, photography, repurposed goods, sculpture, and more. The show is comprised entirely of University of Scranton student, staff, and faculty submissions, so please consider contributing!

The deadline for submissions is set for Friday, April 11, 2014. All works of art are returned after the exhibit is closed on April 24.

The Mutiny on the Bounty: A 225-Year Voyage from Fiction to Fact

Mutiny on the Bounty Exhibit FlyerAlthough the mutiny on the Bounty will always stand as a signal event in maritime history, the circumstances surrounding the mutiny have been clouded by early attacks on Lieutenant William Bligh and by motion pictures, which portrayed him as a tyrant. Doubtless, Bligh had a sharp tongue which he used quite effectively to berate his petty officers. But contrary to the portrait created by partisans of the mutineers, Bligh was an enlightened commander who limited the use of disciplinary flogging.

The mutiny is only part of the story. After the Bounty was taken by Fletcher Christian and his fellow mutineers, Bligh and 18 loyalists squeezed into a launch for a harrowing 47 day open boat voyage in bad weather. Bligh and most of his men survived one of the greatest feats of navigation in history and returned home.  But Bligh, eventually a Rear-Admiral, was always dogged by the mutiny and by the concerted smear campaign waged by a couple pardoned mutineers and the family of Christian.

In celebration of the 225th anniversary of the mutiny, Weinberg Library is presenting an exhibit on the topic drawn from the collection of University benefactor and alumnus Edward R. Leahy.   Mr. Leahy has acquired rare and fascinating books showing both the historical facts and the efforts to sully Bligh. From Bligh’s Narrative to the mutineer’s court martial transcripts to the spurious Fletcher Christian letters and the authentic and extremely rare Peter Heywood letters, Mr. Leahy has assembled the historical evidence. But he has also collected the start of the Mutiny saga in the arts with works like Lord Byron’s The Island. This exhibit provides both the fiction and the facts of the mutiny on the Bounty.

The Heritage Room exhibit will open February 7 and close April 17, 2014. On April 9 at 5:30 PM Edward Leahy will speak on The Mutiny on the Bounty: Myth and Fact in the Heritage Room with a reception to follow. The talk is free and open to the public.

Library Requests Book Donations and Volunteers

The University of Scranton’s Weinberg Memorial Library is requesting book and tag sale donations for its annual spring book sale, as well as volunteers to help with preparation and staffing for the event, which will take place during the last weekend of April. All proceeds from the book sale benefit the Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library Endowment, which supports library collections and services.

The library will accept all titles of used hardcover and paperback books, including children’s books, cookbooks, fiction and non-fiction. In addition, the library is collecting videos, compact discs, audio-cassettes, records and tag sale items.

This year’s book sale is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., and Sunday, April 27, from noon until 4 p.m., in the fifth floor Heritage Room of the Weinberg Memorial Library.

Donations may be placed in the boxes on the Monroe Avenue side of the library, and will be accepted until Wednesday, April 23.

This year’s book sale is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., and Sunday, April 27, from noon until 4 p.m., in the fifth floor Heritage Room of the Weinberg Memorial Library. The Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library, the library staff and volunteers will conduct the event. Book prices begin at $1.00 in addition to specialty priced items.

A special preview sale will be held on Friday, April 25, for Friends’ members and Schemel Forum members.

An illustrated history talk and exhibit reception will be held in the Weinberg Memorial Library on October 2nd at 6 p.m. in celebration  of the 125th Anniversary of the University.

The presentation, titled From the 300 Block of Wyoming Avenue to the Hill Section: The Evolution of the University of Scranton  from 1888 to the Present, will be presented by Dr. Frank X.J. Homer, Professor of History Emeritus.  The talk will be held in Library Room 305.

A reception will follow in the Library’s 5th Floor Heritage Room for the exhibit, Pride, Passion, Promise: Celebrating the 125th Anniversary.

The event is sponsored by Friends of the Weinberg Library.

Pride, Passion, Promise: Celebrating the 125th Anniversary

The Library’s current exhibit, Pride, Passion, Promise: Celebrating the 125th Anniversary, displays photographs, documents, and memorabilia from the founding of the school in 1888 to the present. It covers the range of activities that institutions of higher education engage in, including student life, the development of the campus, as well as the primary purpose of educating students.

2013 Library Research Prize Winners

Congratulations to the winners of the WML’s 3rd Annual Library Research Prize! The Weinberg Memorial Library inaugurated the prize to recognize excellence in research projects that show evidence of significant knowledge in the methods of research and the information gathering process, and use of library resources, tools, and services.

Graduate WinnerIse Kannebecker, a student in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program, whose submission, “Exploring the Effects of a Longer Music Listening Session on Reducing Postoperative Pain: A Research Proposal,” was selected as this year’s winner of the prize in the Graduate category. Ise’s supporting faculty member was Dr. Margarete Zalon in the Nursing Department.

In her essay describing the research process, Ise wrote:

The interlibrary loan department proved to be of invaluable assistance to me with my research proposal as well in obtaining articles from journals that the library did not possess. This was particularly useful to me when I was doing research from my home.  Occasionally I even utilized the library’s texting service when I encountered search questions, which proved helpful and convenient too.

Three graduate students were chosen to receive Honorable Mentions – Kristin Leccese and Christina Tripodi, Occupational Therapy majors, and Jessica Palmeri, a Marketing major.

Undergraduate WinnerChristine Ferrari, a senior Nursing major, was chosen as the prize winner in the Undergraduate category. Her submission was titled, “Pláticas de la presiόn arterial: Hypertension Education in the Hispanic Community.” Dr. Margarete Zalon in the Nursing Department was her supporting faculty member.

Christine wrote in her essay describing the research process:

The resources from the Weinberg Memorial Library undoubtedly enabled me to write my Honors thesis. They have left me feeling well-equipped to navigate whatever graduate education and professional research in which I may participate in the future. More importantly, however, they allowed me to design and implement a nursing intervention that taught Hispanic individuals about hypertension and provided them with the tools to reduce their risk for a detrimental disease. Thanks to the resources from the library, these individuals have a better chance to happier, healthier, and longer lives.

Honorable Mentions were also awarded to three undergraduate students – Bernadetta Bernatowicz, a Biology major, William Reddington, a History major, and Joseph Seemiller, a Neuroscience major.

Winners were honored at a reception and awards ceremony on Thursday, May 9, 2013 in the Heritage Room of the Library. More photos from the reception can be seen here.

 

 

Environmental Art Show Now Open

On Earth Day, Monday, April 22 from 5-7PM the 3rd Annual Environmental Art Show will host a reception open to the public.

The Environmental Art Show boasts a new Instagram Exhibit featuring dozens of photographs from student, staff, and faculty photographers, an exhibit documenting a U of S Travel Course that went to the Philippines , as well as numerous, diverse, and excellent artworks from sixteen different campus artists.

Please join us at the Reception Monday night to interact with the artists and appreciate their art. There will be light refreshments served.

The Art Show is open for viewing any time the library Heritage Room is open and will run until Noon on Thursday, April 25.
