The Library is still accepting submissions for its annual Environmental Art Show! You now have until Sunday April 15th to bring your Environmentally themed artwork into the library.

The purpose of the Environmental Art Show is to promote sustainability through outreach and artwork. By submitting a piece (or pieces) to the Environmental Art Show you are showing your support for the Environment and letting the local community know that The University of Scranton cares about Sustainability.

Environmental Artwork can be broadly interpreted and includes, but is not limited to: Photographs oil paintings, water colors, acrylics, mixed media, recycled goods. Environmental subjects include, but is not limited to: flowers, nature scenes, trees, animals, environmental degradation and destruction, etc.

I strongly urge you to show your support for sustainability and submit artwork to the Art Show.

In honor of Earth Week, the library will be hosting its 2nd Annual Environmental Art Show. The purpose of the Art Show is to promote sustainability and raise awareness about environmental issues. In addition, the exhibit will showcase the talents of the University community. This is an open call for artwork, so any student, staff, or faculty member interested in submitting to the Environmental Art Show is welcome.

All types of environmentally themed art are welcome, this includes photography, painting, sculpting, graphic design, altered images, fashion, and any other area of creativity. Submissions must be environmentally themed. Examples of environmentally themed art include nature scenes, wildlife, humanity’s effect on the environment, clothing made from recycled or re-purposed goods, and creative messages about sustainable issues. For photos from last years exhibit please see our flickr album. Any and all questions should be directed to george.aulisio@scranton.edu. There is no limit on submissions. However, not all submissions will necessarily be displayed. All artwork will be returned by the end of the semester.

Submissions are asked to be ready for display (within reason). This means, for example, that photographs and paintings are matted or framed, any artist who has special display needs should contact George Aulisio. Please bring your submissions to the library’s Reference Desk or Circulation Desk before April 13, 2012.

The Environmental Art Show will be held in the Heritage room and runs from Monday, April 16 until Wednesday, April 25. There will be an opening night reception on the evening of April 16th for a chance to meet the artists and discuss their artwork.

RefWorks is a citation manager that helps you to keep your research organized, store documents, and create annotated bibliographies. The University of Scranton has a subscription to RefWorks that is available to all students, staff, and faculty.

The library will be hosting drop in instructional sessions for students to take advantage of this powerful tool. All sessions will be in Library room 306. Students can stop in at their convenience to ask questions or to get general instruction on how and why they should be on Ref Works. Available drop-in times are:

Iggy stopped by the library today to get a drink of water. As you can see, Iggy practices a sustainable lifestyle, using his Save Our World BPA-Free water bottle to fill up at the library’s purified water station. If only we were all more like Iggy.

Stop by the Circulation Desk and pick-up the cheapest, most environmentally friendly bottle on campus! You can even pay with your Royal Card!

Scranton’s annual Pages and Places Book Festival is coming up next Saturday, October 1st. It’s a wonderful day of interesting events, held all over downtown Scranton.

To encourage our students to attend the festival, this year the Weinberg Memorial Library is giving away 60 free all-access passes (which ordinarily cost $75!). If you’re a University of Scranton student, just ask for a ticket at our 1st floor circulation desk. You can also pick up a second ticket for a student friend. The passes will be given out first come, first served, so make sure you stop by the Library soon to get yours!

Many thanks to the University’s Office of Community Relations for sponsoring the tickets and for helping our students explore their adopted city.

Our laptop borrowing program has always been popular with students, so this year we thought we’d expand it! Now, students can borrow one of our three brand new iPad2s.

We want to help our students explore this new world of tablet computing, so we’ve made borrowing an iPad as easy as possible.  To request an iPad, all you have to do is stop by our circulation desk.  Our laptops can only be borrowed for a period of 3 hours, but when you check out an iPad, you’ll get to keep it for a whole day. And even better – unlike our laptops, which have to stay in the building, you can take your borrowed iPad out of the Library and use it where ever you like.

Give our iPads a whirl, and then let us know what you think of this new program! If we see the iPads getting a lot of use, we’ll look into purchasing more of them (or purchasing one or more Android tablets).

Looking for work this summer?

The Weinberg Memorial Library is looking for a Local /Commuter University of Scranton student who is eligible for work study year round through Financial Aid. Applicant must have available Summer hours to work anytime between from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday to perform clerical work for the Library Administrative Assistant. Lunch coverage (12:00-1:00) is desirable. Job position will be for the balance of the summer months and continuing on subsequent semesters. Position will normally be available to the chosen candidate throughout his/her Academic years or until his/her graduation. Applicant should have experience in Excel, Word, answering of phones (have strong communication skills) and filing.

Congratulations to Rosemary Shaver, a junior History/Political Science major, who was selected as the winner of the first annual Library Research Prize!

The Weinberg Memorial Library inaugurated the prize to recognize excellence in research projects that show evidence of significant knowledge in the methods of research and the information gathering process, and use of library resources, tools, and services.

Three students were selected to receive Honorable Mentions–Courtney Fluehr, Benjamin Redan, and William Woody.

Winners will be honored at a reception and awards ceremony on Thursday, May 12, 2011 in the Heritage Room of the Library.
