Job Posting: Seeking Public Services/Reference Librarian (part-time)

The University of Scranton seeks a Public Services/Reference Librarian. This is a part-time, twelve month, professional staff position. The part-time Public Services Librarian participates in Library public service activities including: provides research services virtually and in person, provides instruction in the strategy and techniques of research and information evaluation, oversees Library services and staff in the absence of the full-time librarian, participates on the collection development team, and maintains an atmosphere conducive to study including proper operation of equipment, good order of materials, absence of disruption, and supervision of closing the building.

Qualifications: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program is required. Library experience is required.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include: research and information evaluation skills, supervisory skills, communication skills, including the ability to instruct students individually and in groups, and the ability to deal well with members of the public.

Hours are Tuesday from 6:00 pm-11:30 p.m. and Saturday from 12 noon to 8 p.m. Flexibility in working additional hours or adjusting hours as required by the academic calendar is preferred.

Write and Cite Comes to the WML

Last Tuesday and Wednesday, May 13th and 14th, the CTLE‘s Writing Center set up camp in the Weinberg Memorial Library to offer assistance to students with their final papers.

This collaboration between the Writing Center and the Library was called “Write & Cite,” and included 4-6 Writing Consultants located at two stations (with refreshments!) during the evening on the Tuesday and Wednesday of Dead Week. Consultants were available for drop-in appointments in the 1st floor Reilly Learning Commons and the 2nd floor Reference Desk area from 5 to 8 pm both nights. The premise was for consultants to be available to assist students with their writing where that writing was actually taking place, and the close proximity of the Reference Desk meant students could also be referred to a Reference Librarian for assistance with formatting their citations.

And the event was a success! Thirty-three students received assistance through writing consultations over the course of both nights of the program, with three referrals to a librarian for citation assistance.

Do not fear: beginning in Fall 2014, the Writing Center will have two satellite locations in the Reilly Learning Commons, making our resourceful Writing Consultants a permanent fixture in the Weinberg Memorial Library.

Dr. Zych’s Capstone Marketing class forces students to learn beyond the classroom (hence the clever name for the program). For their final project the “Chrysler 300 team” does work in the library late into the night.

Finding New Books Made Easy

WML Research GuidesThanks to the Library’s Cataloging Department, finding new books has never been easier.

Now, if you want to see what new books have come in for a specific subject, then all you have to do is visit the Library’s Research Guides at

You would then pick a subject, for example “History.” In the History Research Guides page you will see useful links which direct you to helpful Databases, Reference Books, Websites, and contact information for the Librarian Subject Specialist; but now there is also a link to “New Library Books.” Clicking New Library Books will take you to the library’s Catalog and a display of all of the new books that the library has acquired for that specific Academic Department!

The Lollipops are Out!

We’ve all been studying very hard and doing a lot of work as the semester wraps up. Late night hours and lack of sleep can be very stressful, so why not enjoy a nice lollipop as you do your work?  Our trusty librarian friends have supplied the students with lollipops at the reference desk for finals week. As you study all week, feel free to grab one!

Student Work featured in Photography Club Gallery

If you’re either a student here at the  U or a regular reader of Infospot, you know all about our new 1st floor 24-hour study space.  Starting today, that new space has one less blank wall.

This fall, the Weinberg Memorial Library partnered with the University’s Photography Club on a collaborative project to market our text messaging reference service.  Members of the Club took photographs of fellow University of Scranton students text messaging and then submitted them to us for review.  We chose our five favorite photographs to use for our marketing campaign – but since there were so many other great photographs, we decided to host a Photography Club gallery here at the Library.

So the next time you’re in the building, stop by the 1st floor group study rooms to find 9 gorgeous photographs celebrating text messaging, all thanks to our Photography Club contributors: James Benfante, Anna Heckman, Sarah Prandy, Aimee Miller, Gillian Naro, and Jon Danforth.  We’d also like to extend an extra thank you to Jon, who is both the Vice President of the Photography Club and one of our Library TechCons, for coordinating the gallery.

Library Outreach TechCon

This TechCon supports the Library’s Public Services initiatives and reports to the Library’s Evening Public Services Librarian, George Aulisio.

Afternoon, evening, and some weekend hours available.

Job responsibilities for this position include:

  • Publicizing Library events and services using the Library’s social media presence (with regular postings to the Library’s blog, Flickr, Facebook, and Twitter accounts).
  • Researching the usage of social media tools at other libraries.
  • Preparing informational slides, images, and video for the Library’s new television displays.
  • Photographing Library events and activities.
  • Assisting the Public Services Librarians in planning outreach activities.
    • Potential projects include gaming events and Earth Week.
    • Assisting the Digital Services Librarian and Digitization TechCon in promoting digital collections.
    • Assisting with other special projects as needed.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, and Powerpoint
  • Familiarity with Mac operating system and software
  • Experience with audio/video editing and graphic design
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Familiarity with social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter, and with current social media trends and culture

Printer Problems?

The computers in the Library are networked using a system called UniPrint. Sometimes UniPrint goes down. The Library now has a backup plan in place for students when this happens which uses a “crash cart” with a stand-alone computer and printer.  The “crash cart” will be located in the alcove adjacent to the Reference Desk on the 2nd floor of the Library. If this happens, you’ll need to save the document you want to print to a flash/thumb drive or e-mail the document to yourself. If you need any help, you can ask one of the Reference Librarians.
