Please join us on Tuesday October 21, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the Moskovitz Theater in the DeNaples Center for a free presentation of Jean Cocteau’s live action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. Mr. Peter Tafuri will lead a discussion after the film.

If you’ve only seen the animated version of this fairy tale, come see Jean Cocteau’s 1946 French adaptation for a unique film experience. When Belle’s father is imprisoned by the Beast for picking a rose from the Beast’s garden, Belle bravely takes her father’s place and a magical adventure follows.

Beauty and the Beast is in French with English subtitles.

The Environmental Art Show is now open to the public and will be available for viewing during the library’s regular hours. There will be a Reception on Wednesday, April 23rd from 5-7PM. Please join us for light refreshments and the opportunity to meet with the artists and other environmental art enthusiasts. The show will come down on Thursday April 24 by Noon.

The annual Friends of the Library Book Sale will be held during the weekend of April 26th.  As always, proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Library endowment fund in support of the Weinberg Memorial Library’s collections and services.

The Library is seeking student volunteers to work at the Book Sale. We will need help setting up, pricing, organizing, and selling the books.  We’ll guide you through the various tasks.  Shifts are flexible, and we have availability for mornings, afternoons, and evenings.  You can volunteer for a couple of hours or for multiple days.

The art show exhibits all types of environmentally themed artwork from University of Scranton Students, Staff, and Faculty.

All submissions can be brought to either the circulation desk or the reference desk. Items will be returned at the close of the Art Show on April 24.

Please join us at 7:00 p.m. on Friday March 28, 2014 in Room 305 of the Weinberg Memorial Library for a free presentation of the Italian drama Shun Li and the Poet. Professor Allison Lai will lead a discussion following the film.

This award-winning film tells the story of two outsiders who become unlikely friends. Shun Li works in a textile factory near Rome, slowly paying off the broker that brought her from China to Italy, while saving money so she can bring her young son to join her. She is suddenly transferred to work as a bartender at a pub in a small fishing village along the Venetian Lagoon. The pub is the hangout of the local fishermen, including Bepi, a handsome old Slav immigrant nicknamed “The Poet.”  A delicate friendship, based in part on their love of poetry, grows between Shun Li and Bepi, but the locals don’t approve, and gossip soon threatens their innocent relationship. Zhao Tao earned Best Actress honors at the 2012 David di Donatello Awards for her portrayal of Shun Li.

Directed by Andrea Segre, Shun Li and the Poet is in Italian and Mandarin with English subtitles.

Call for 2014 Friends of the Library Book Sale VendorsThe Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library are currently seeking applications from University of Scranton student, faculty, and staff Arts and Crafts vendors for the 2014 Annual Friends of the Library Book Sale.  The annual Friends of the Library Book Sale will be held in the Library’s 5th floor Heritage Room Friday, April 25th (preview sale for members and students), 4pm-9pm; Saturday, April 26th, 9am-9pm, and Sunday, April 27th, noon-4pm.

Vendor applications are due by Friday, April, 4th. Vendors will be notified of acceptance by Friday, April 11th.  Approval of applications is space permitting. The Friends of the Library accept only vendors who are selling items that they have created themselves and reserve the right to reject any applicant who does not meet these criteria.

The table space fee is $5.00 per day due prior to table set-up each day with a discounted fee of $10.00 for table space for all three days. The Friends of the Library are not responsible for the loss or damage to any items. The vendors are required to properly staff their tables and are responsible for the sale and security of their merchandise.

The Library would like to recognize Ashleigh Bennett, a Psychology major with a minor in Philosophy, for her hard work and commitment to the Weinberg Memorial Library.  Ashleigh is from Wallenpaupack, Pennsylvania and has worked in Media Resources/EDLAB since August 2012.  Ashleigh is friendly, self-motivated and organized which helps keep the department running smoothly, and she uses her creativity to design posters for the International Film Series.  Her favorite perk of the job is previewing new films. 

In addition to her work responsibilities, Ashleigh is a member of Circle K, a community service organization on campus, where she has volunteered at a local daycare center and for Safe Trick or Treat.  Ashleigh’s favorite hobby is photography and her photos have been published in the University’s literary magazine Esprit for several years.  Her recent photo submission “No Quarters” is on the cover of the Fall 2013 edition.     

After graduation Ashleigh plans to attend graduate school for Clinical Psychology and then begin working in that field.

Thank you Ashleigh!  We appreciate all you do.

The library is currently seeking submissions for the 4th annual Environmental Art Show that will be held from April 14th until 3:30PM on the 24th. There will be a reception held on Wednesday April 23rd—more details to follow in the coming months.

The purpose of the Environmental Art Show is to promote the natural beauty of our environment and the concept of sustainability through artworks of all types, including painting, photography, repurposed goods, sculpture, and more. The show is comprised entirely of University of Scranton student, staff, and faculty submissions, so please consider contributing!

The deadline for submissions is set for Friday, April 11, 2014. All works of art are returned after the exhibit is closed on April 24.

You can receive $500 if you are the winner of the Weinberg Memorial Library’s Library Research Prize!

How to Apply:

1. Complete the Project Application Form. (Individual or Group) Group winners share the $500.

2. Submit a 500-700 word description of the research methods and information gathering process used to complete a research project for a course that you take here at the University of Scranton. Your essay should include how you used library resources, tools and services to gather your research. (Upload along with your application.)

3. Submit a copy of your project along with the application, which can be in any format.

4. A bibliography or other appropriate listing of sources consulted. (Upload with your application.)

  • Use bibliography format and conventions appropriate to the discipline.
  • Cite all sources that you consulted, even if you did not directly quote from them. This bibliography may differ from your Works Cited or Reference List since it will include not only your quoted sources, but also your background material.

5. Ask your professor to complete a statement of faculty support. (Online form for faculty.)

Dates to Remember:

  • Application Deadline is Friday, December 6, 2013 at 4:00pm for courses completed during Summer or Fall
